3 1/4" is exactly 3 1/4". It's not vague in the slightest and makes perfect sense.

Indeed. Perhaps they don't understand fractions and don't realise that 3 & 1/4 is 3.25 3 1/4" is exactly 3 1/4". It's not vague in the slightest and makes perfect sense.
Probably best not to mention the "thou" as a division of an inch.

Use of the indefinite article “an” before a consonant, e.g., he was in an car, as opposed to in a car, of course it may certainly be a rushed typo, but I keep seeing it in posts on various forums,
as in, “he ate an carrot, while I ate a bean.”

Similarly, when people choose it based on the phonetic sound rather than the text. The prime example being people referring to "an F1 car". The example you cite is the correct use of "an". Abbreviations and acronyms that are pronounced phonetically use the "a/an" rule according to their sound. Cold said:

Edit: I guess that explains "an F1 car" too - the word has an initial spoken vowel sound if you pronounce it "eff-wun". Obviously you wouldn't say "an Formula One car"

My Vito. Had a nice helpful "driving bulb fail" on the dashboard, no problemo, bought said bulb and just tried changing it. Not a chance. I can just about squeeze my hand in to the back of the headlight, no movement at all possible to undo the cap. This is bonkers. Maybe if i remove washer reservoir i can get to it, no i would need to remove expansion tank aswell. Must be an easier way, look on youtube , need to take grill out , drop bumper , undo the headlight and remove. FFS. Should have took Halfords offer to change it for £8 or whatever it was.
Any my boys, both home for the weekend, both in their twenties, both with good full time jobs, both cannot for love nor money load the f

Not an Audi is it by any chance?? I had a series of headlight bulb failures on my S6 and Halfords wouldn’t fit them under their £8 scheme as it would take them a couple of hrs labour to strip the front and reassemble ... She will do this with many items when we are shopping and it drives me insane. The weekly food shop can be done by me in about 20 minutes, if she comes along it’s usually about an hour. Maddening!
