Anybody watch the King George and Might Bite's demolition of Bristol and Thistlecrack?

That was some run, lead the field from the off and a very obvious tactic to run the legs off Bristol and Thistlecrack. Massive stamina to stay for 3 miles pounding the race and hold off the fast finishing Shuffle and Tea.

Speaking of Double Shuffle, did anybody see the odds?? Out at 66-1 to start with and 50-1 by the start of the race! Had to be some Each Way money made on that!!

Anyway...Gold Cup??

Bristol De Mai's 11lb raise from Haydock seemed excessive to me, just a horse that loves heavy going.

Being interested to see how SIzing John gets on tomorrow and how that effects the antepost betting for GC.

I think its wide open.
I remember last yr watching Thistlecrack at the KG and thinking that was some horse. Might Bite took him apart this yr.

We are in a bit of a fallow period for jumping at the moment. The greats are gone...KS, Denman, Long Run...even the 2nd rate "goods" of that generation...Silvanio Conti...are gone and we are waiting to see what comes next.

Silvianco Conti was one of 'those' horses that I would always back, whatever the conditions or track. Same with Sire De Grugy. It never paid dividends would hate myself if I ignored them and they came in.

Min/Altior/MiteBite/Beavue D'air (sp) etc etc will be the new greats, but you'll never look at them with the rose tinted specs until their era is over. Aside from Sprinter Sacre, you could appreciate him at the time! biggrin

No, I disagree about them being new greats.

I think Greats are immediately identifiable by *something*. I think its pretty staggering we got KS, Denman and Long Run at roughly the same time.

Now I regard KS as simply the greatest horse over jumps of all time, so Denman and LR must have been in similar class to mix it with him.

(everyone is free to argue that Red Rum is vastly superior and that is entirely your right, as it should be)

I see no Greats currently.

What do we think of Faugheen today?

Not massively surprised myself (although admittedly could not have opposed him) and feel very sorry for anyone getting involved at 2/11. The 6/4 for the Champion Hurdle is now looking a bit short as well!

Hope the horse is ok.

I'd sadly agree with that.

As well as the ones you mention I remember being at Wetherby once when the whole crowd stopped to watch Desert Orchid at the other meeting (Kempton?). He looked beaten on the run in but got back up to win in a photo. The crowd erupted.

I also remember the golden age of Night Nurse, Silver Buck, Wayward Lad and my particular favourite Burrough Hill Lad.

(had £20 on at 6/1 ante-post. A huge bet for me in those days. Get in.)

Honourable mentions to hurdlers Sea Pigeon, See You Then and Istabraq.

Anyone old enough to remember Arkle?

I'm sure some new champions will emerge although the stars seem concentrated in fewer stables these days so less rivalry. I always used to have a few ante-post slips for Cheltenham but seemed to have lost that habit.

My grandfather absolutely adores/adored Arkle - The 1964 GC on YouTube is really worth a watch. Commentary by Peter Sulliven is fantastic, that instantly recognisable voice.

I personally don't do AntePost betting, no until bookmakers go No Runner No Bet, too much chance to have your fingers burnt, although that explains the value you can get.

Desert Orchid and to a degree, Kauto Star and Denman are a bit before my time but I can appreciate them for what they're worth.

Dessie and Arkle were both some horses, fully agree there.

Its one of those fantasy match up things, but God wouldnt you have loved to see Dessie in a GC field with KS, Denman and LR ??!

Any of you lot keep horses? I've 2 welsh cobbs in the stables and a 16+ hands lovely 20+ yr old mare who is basically in retirement and is ex training school, so does the training work in the menage for anyone who wants to ride. One of the cobbs is fast as lightning, esp in barrel racing.

To revive an old(ish) thread in light of Cheltenham coming up. Anyone going? Fancy anything in particular?

Going on the Friday this year, usually go Tues & Weds. Looking forward to seeing the GC for the first time! Don't fancy Might Bite but agree that its one of the most open in recent years.

With regards the Novices Hurdle on the Wednesday I think Samcro is the second coming so betting w/o him would be best way to go!

Won't be doing so this year though.....

I'm liking Our Duke, with an each way possibly on Killultagh Vic though I'm not certain on that one yet.

Sadly not going this year, was supposed to be in DXB for the World Cup but that trip's been postponed as well so I'm TV only unfortunately.

Just doing my selections for tomorrow

Kalashnikov for the Supreme
Saint Calvados for the Arkle
Shantou Flyer and Cogry (both e/w) for the Ultima
MTOY e/w for the Champion Hurdle
La Bague Au Roi in the Mares (to win and w/o Apple's Jade)
No real thoughts for the 16:30 (looking at Ms Parfois) and probably a small e/w on De Plotting Shed for the 17:30.

The Supreme is a proper tough call, I've been veering toward getabird or even first flow if its gets any stickier underfoot...
Any reason for your choice?
