I am in no way a winter sports expert (not even an amateur!) but I have thoroughly enjoyed the ski-cross and the speed skating. The mass speed skating looks bonkers!!!

I don't get it.

Russia banned for doping.

But your athletes can come anyway.

As long as they are clean.

2 Russian atheletes caught doping.

Russia unbanned for doping.

Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.

I've enjoyed the curling immensely, you can't really expect the BBC to show other sports when members of team GB are in the hunt for a medal. You always have the option of the red button or Eurosport.
The option of the red button.....on prgrammes broadcast before most are awake or while they are at work.

And you have to pay extra for Eurosport.

I agree. It sounds like Alice in Wonderland.

(Apparently it is because the doping at Sochi was considered to be state sponsored, whereas this time the “clean” Russians who were caught were just krazy independent free spirited kids freelancing it. Still doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.)

Incredible performance this morning from Marit Bjoergen to become the most decorated ever Winter Olympian athlete, and at 37 too.

Just makes no sense. That's the IOC for you!

Most of the Russian drug taking in Sochi came out well after the actual games didn't it?
How do we know that the same isn't going to happen this time, when they do more tests?

I'm confused as to why the next winter games are in Beijing. We just had an Asian city, so it's going to be a similar time zone again; plus it's not that long since Beijing had the summer games. Plus the nearest mountains are some 150 miles away, and it will be another all-manmade-snow games. Seems an odd choice.

They can afford it, the infrastructure is there from 2008, and maybe not many traditional winter cities/resorts want the expenditure/cost to put them on......at a guess.

That’s it. A ton of places were interested in bidding but couldn’t garner local support. Three bids were made; Oslo pulled out leaving a two horse race between Beijing and Almaty.

The places that have local support for puttting in a bid for the 2026 winter games are few and far between; there’s a fair chance it could go to Sapporo by default.

The IOC makes some extortionate demands on the host cities and although it is trying to make the hosting process cheaper, it’s still ridiculously expensive and disruptive.

I’m a big fan, went to Vancouver and had London on our doorstep, and will aim to go to Paris. But if the IOC’s model is discouraging bidders, it has to change.

And Tokyo the next summer games in 2020. Western audiences are easy to loose.

I’d restrict that to European audiences, the USA isn’t a big time jump.

Then there’s the commonwealth games on the Gold Coast in a little over a month, so we won’t get to see a lot of that live either.

Did anyone watch the closing ceremony and think Discworld? I’m guessing Mr Pratchett did his research well.

I meant to post this on the day of victory but Lizzy Yarnold for Sports Personality 2018 ?

It's football world cup year so unless England win ,footballers are out ,no one cares if Lewis wins F1 for the 5th time,

so could be a good shout ?

First woman to successfully defend Skeleton title ,I'd vote for her.

I wonder if any of the non-North Korean athletes and a North Korean athlete got to try each other out?

You’d think so but you know they’ll come out with some other person. There was a female mountain biker a couple of years ago, done loads for the sport and picked up some nice gold medals in various competitions that year.

Didn’t even get a sniff instead I think it went Hamilton again!

Complete and utter waste of time and money.

Various ways of sliding down a snow covered hill.

On your back. On your front. Standing up. Lying down. Forwards. Backwards. On your own. With friends. With one bit of wood strapped to each leg. With one bit of wood strapped to both legs.

What useful purpose does it serve?

It cost how much!!

What's the point of any sport?

Running in a straight line. A longer straight line. In a circle. In several circles. Running and jumping over hurdles Over a pole. Using a pole to jump over a higher pole. Throwing round heavy things. Throwing sharp pointy things.
Driving round in circles.

And the ultimate bafflement:

22 people running up and down a big lawn kicking a leather balloon into a fishing net strung from poles.

So, that just leaves Rugby Union as the only sensible pursuit?

That's fair. I'll buy that.

No, that's 30 blokes recreating the works of Caravaggio on a big lawn.
