We had both a 2-club and a 3-club tournament. Only a putter was mandatory.

Scores were generally pretty good.
Yep, had the same at our golf club. Scores from some people were better than when they had a full bag to choose from.*

By the 4th you're getting pretty good with that 6 iron. By the 18th you can knock birds out of the sky with it and want to take it to bed.

Next week: back to rubbish.
hehe

Spot on, Jim.

I never quite get to the stage where I can knock birds out of the sky frown

Big practice session ahead of a weekend at turnberry this afternoon. All consistent but with a weird pushy fade thing going on. Need to remind myself not to set up as open as I have been and to keep my hands forward a bit and all's well - bit high still though

The 3 holes practice after gave a gross level so seems to be working but was mainly the 4 putts (just short of first 2 greens) and good chipping help.

Let's hope the weather up north holds up!!!

I am hoping you have a great time. Even if you play crap you will enjoy it. The weather is definitely turning so should be pleasant.

Pleasant. Is that enough? When you are struggling to get out of that bunker, just don’t think about where you could have been!!! wink

My favourite place I've ever played. I'd love to go back and see how Trump's changes have made it better (or not). In fairness, the plans looked good to me.

Wonderful course, and a great place to stay as well. At least, it was pre-Trump, dunno what it's like now?

I’d love to play there. It looks spectacular.

A match at Worksop for me tomorrow. It’s an annual event, The Vulcan Trophy. Each of the 7 RAF Stations in our league send 2 players plus a pair from the league committee.

Just entered a 36 hole comp at Coxmoor too.

I forget; is it Coxmoor that has the enormously long 18th green? It's over 20 years since I played there.

Had a similar rules infringement called on me a few years ago playing Matchplay pairs when I hit my ball into a ditch. I found it but it was too steep to get in where it was so I took a club and walked back 25 yards or so to where it was shallower. Got in and took a couple of steps but realised it was one of them to play so stopped and waited, and while I was waiting I (without thinking!) put my club on the ground and rested it against my leg while I put my glove on. Matey came running over saying I'd grounded my club in a hazard so lost the hole, even though I was stood about 20 yards from my ball!

He was probably right, and I didn't care enough to worry one way or the other, but I thought it was pretty opportunistic and not really relevant to the reasons why a club shouldn't be grounded ie testing the ground or sweeping rubbish out the way on the backswing. A mindset I hadn't come across before in a social golf scenario, still bump into the guy at our club, still chat to him, but still think he's a twerp!!

Fundamentally, I think knowing and playing to the rules is a good thing - often knowing the rules can help you out e.g. free relief. That said, outside of competitions, when I'm knocking around with mates, I'm there to have fun and couldn't care less about some of them. There's a huge difference between not knowing the rules and cheating though.

Some of the new rule changes for 2018/2019 are good. Your example above would not have you losing the hole from 2019!

If someone pulled that out on me I would just walk off the course. Completely unnecessary enforcement of the rules.

It’s my first time there, so I couldn’t say for sure, but looking at it from above you might well be right.

Couldn’t agree more. People think the rules are there to punish them, and obviously they are to some extent, but use them correctly and they can get you out of a sticky situation.

Jordan Spieth at The Open being the obvious recent example.

You should try going to the Calloway Las Vegas driving range. it is at the end of the runway and the sport is to try and hit the planes landing.

I would turn up expecting the worst round ever. It should relax you and help your swing.

Last time I had a long lay-off, I had a fabulous round. Two days later I had a mare!

Play for bogey. Be conservative. Concentrate on always being in contention in the hole and let his mistakes be the deciding factor.

You don't have to actively win it if he's busy losing it.

When I booked the round at this place; http://www.doreandtotleygolfclub.co.uk/course-gall... I asked them how long they'd expect a round to take. "About 3 1/2 hours sir" was the answer. When I mentioned that it would be two very, very, very poor players playing they upped their estimation to "5 hours, maybe a bit longer" hehe
Dore & Totley is nice enough - not as nice as the area it's located in though......

Played Oulton Hall near Leeds at the weekend - an 18 and a 9 so two combinations of 18.

Day 1 - front 9 - 6 points. Back 19 - 18 points.

Day 2 - New 9 holes - 20 points. Back 9 (front that was played one day 1) - 20 points.

Took 2nd place overall which was pleasing.

Greens in cracking condition for the recent weather. Course interesting enough - bit of a long walk though.

I'd be overjoyed if I could get a bogey on every hole!
You won't have to. If he's going for gold and more often than not scoring 7,8,9,10, then if you get, say, 12 bogeys you should win comfortably, even if he's lucky enough to get a handful of pars.

Key is to make sure that every time he has a disaster you win the hole, even if you win it 7 against 8. If you're matching him disaster for disaster, then it's a lottery. You could score 10 shots lower than him and still lose.

If it's his honour and he puts it in the trees, then your hole has changed completely. Put your wood back in the bag and reach for a 6 iron.
