A suspect linked with a series of deadly parcel bombs targeting the Texan city of Austin is dead after a major police operation, officials say.

The man was killed after detonating a device when officers approached his car off a highway in the city of Round Rock, north of the state capital.

He has been named by US media as Mark Anthony Conditt, aged 23.

The incident follows four bomb attacks in Austin and one in Schertz, 65 miles (104km) south.

It occurs to me that you have to dig quite deep to find the word "terror".

If he had an Islamic name, do you think they'd be so reticent about calling him a terrorist?

Do we know his intentions behind his crimes?

no, but the point is that if he had an Islamic name, then the intention behind his crimes wouldn't matter. He would be branded a terrorist in the media within 0.32 seconds of the first bomb detonation being reported and we'd have another debate on immigration policy

Some friends of mine were heading out to Austin yesterday and today for the Lonestar Roundup, and they were a bit anxious given what was happening, so they will be mighty relieved that this nutter's killing spree has ended.

Build a wall around Texas. That'll stop the problem from ever happening again.

Or give everyone a bomb, to reduce further bomb crime?

Am i doing this right?

I was on a call earlier with some suppliers based in Austin. A few were late on the call due to transport changes resulting from the incident.

The way they were talking, they were glad that the terror was over. Definitely was a terrorist.

Needed to be sure he wasn't someone suffering from a mental illness and a member of the NRA.
