The **BOXING** thread (Vol 3)
Discussion
i think it's the memory of such a ludicrous 114-114 draw by cj ross that sticks in people's mind as a disgrace, easy to think it was 2 closer-than-justifiable and one outrageous card...
it's similar to canelo/ golovkin 1 ...... i posted in here at the time the scorecards of something like 100 journalists, ex fighters and so on.... it was insane that only 2 of 100 scored it narrowly for canelo, and they were mexican fighters....a few for the draw and 90+% for golovkin....
the fact that the fight was declared a draw almost gets forgotten, most people remembering it as a robbery against golovkin.... it was , of course, because he was robbed of a deserved win and breaking bernard hopkins record....but you see my point
but the fact that moretti scored narrowly for golovkin (acceptable), trella scored the draw (eyebrow raising) , then byrd scored it 118-110 for canelo (outragous by anyone's reckoning..she should be shot!)
if byrd had scored that even close the travesty wouldn't have been as magnified as it was..

When you see that one judge gave the fight to Canelo when he was utterly outclassed by Mayweather...
They didn’t.Two cards for the woman beater and one even.

All we can do is remind people. GGG1 was the greatest travesty I've seen at elite level.it's similar to canelo/ golovkin 1 ...... i posted in here at the time the scorecards of something like 100 journalists, ex fighters and so on.... it was insane that only 2 of 100 scored it narrowly for canelo, and they were mexican fighters....a few for the draw and 90+% for golovkin....

Estrada, a female champ, fought someone who'd only fought basically on cards in strip clubs and knocked her out in 7 seconds. Horrible fight that never should have happened. Can't think of any worse than that.

Yay, something other than 'experts' talking about Alvarez. What's the biggest mismatch you've ever seen in professional boxing?
WELL.... thats actually a much more complicated question than it first appears.
I think that the word mismatch brings to mind quick stoppages, though these are often not really mismatches, just a good punch landed early. For example Kostya Tszyu v Zab Judah or Tua v Ruiz. Both of those contests were reasonably fair matches when they were made in terms of levels but the results make them appear like mismatches.
More of a mismatch is when a boxer is no longer the man that he was, time has done the job. For example Duran was the man that used to be Duran when he boxed William Joppy. Ali was the man that used to be Ali when he lost to Holmes. Roy Jones v Glen Johnson, Tyson v Kevin McBride etc etc etc.
Then there are the shock results, Khan v Prescott or Tarver v Jones 2, Wlad v Sanders etc.
I would say that the examples that come to mind as a 'proper mismatch', when the two boxers didn't belong in the same ring would be contests such as Haye v Maccarinelli or retrospectively RJJ v Griffin 2 (most of Roy Jones career perhaps?) and perhaps most of Deontay Wilders career when his natural power far outweighed his rudimentary skills.

Yeah that was a bad one.https://youtu.be/UR7TpTjbDJo
Female boxing will be full of similar results, its still too young. The vast majority are moms that do a bit of Thai-Bo, then there are a few actual female boxers.

David Tua v Andy Ruiz.
As great a fantasy match-up as this is, I think you mean John Ruiz Pacquiao is beginning to annoy me with his protracted declaring of his next appointment. Mikey Garcia is now saying it is him. After what Spence did to Garcia, I have no interest in seeing him fight Manny.

Don’t know where you’re getting HAYE v Enzo as a mismatch from? WELL.... thats actually a much more complicated question than it first appears.

That fight was Enzo 5th defence of his title and Hayes 1st. Enzo’ s best opponent prior was probably Braithwaite and Hayes was mormeck or fragomeni before that.
On paper it was good match up. Ok the result of a 2nd round tko makes it look a mismatch but there’s been plenty of early losses in similar circumstances for fighters meeting at that level.
That women’s fight probably takes the biscuit anyway though, you can tell by the way the opponent walks out of the corner that she’s not even doing the basics of boxing

On paper it was a mismatch UNLESS Warren was right in his gamble that Haye was struggling to make weight which MIGHT make it a winnable contest. He wasn't. It isn't the result that makes it look like a mismatch, as I mentioned, sometimes evenly matched contests sometimes end early, it was the entire fight from the opening bell. That fight was Enzo 5th defence of his title and Hayes 1st. I agree Brathwaite was Enzos best win but an at home points win over Braithwaite is not the same as an away from home KO of Mormeck. They each also had one defeat going in, Haye when Booth threw in the towel against Thompson after blowing himself out going for an ill advised stoppage, Enzo had been counted out after a leaping jab from a journeyman.

I don't know if it's the biggest mismatch but for me the most disappointing matchup was Audley Harrison vs David Haye as I genuinely bought into the hype and believed Audley to be at least half decent at the time. I even forked out for the PPV. What's the biggest mismatch you've ever seen in professional boxing?
