Naz is a legend; albeit, under-appreciated now. Wilder is not on the level Naz was on.

If anyone has a spare hour or two; go and watch some old Naz fights. Guy was other worldly, on occasion.

I have read some of your comments and passions, with interest.

Could those of you enthusiasts suggest a variety of fights to watch for entertainment and perhaps must-see bouts? I have watched a few, obviously, but mainly the modern popular ones.

Emanuel Steward said Naseem Hamed was the most naturally talented fighter he had ever seen. That says it all. He had everything - other-worldly middleweight power at featherweight, hand speed, crazy unique defence, super quick footwork & movement, high boxing IQ, the lot.

He was a bit like Mike Tyson in that he achieved a huge amount at a very young age, dropped his superb trainer who helped mould his style from the start, then he got lazy after dropping Ingle and relied on his KO power too much while slacking off with the training. iirc he split with Brendan Ingle after he destroyed Kevin Kelley in 4 rounds, another godly performance.

Then he broke his hand after knocking out Augie Sanchez a year before the Barrera fight and he took a lot of time off and ballooned in weight. In a way, he had too much power for his frame and it wrecked his hands.

This is a great read: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2006/may/14/boxi...

If anything, Tyson Fury is like a heavyweight version of Nas, minus the crazy power and unique defence.

Who did Naz beat that was world class? Johnson and Medina were past their prime, equivalent to Wilder taking out Ortiz. He never fought Pacquiao, Marquez or Morales... and Barerra took him apart so badly it was embarrassing.
Read the above article, explains everything.

He KO'd a prime Kevin Kelley who was the best in the divison at that time, plus Steve Robinson, Wilfredo Vazquez, Cesar Soto and Augie Sanchez were all very good fighters and he made them look schoolboys - Augie Sanchez was the last amateur to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Why is it that there aren't any boxers (and haven't been for a while) that fight like Mike Tyson?
Hope that makes sense but when you watch his fights his style is so different to any of the current heavyweights.

Naz's loss to Barerra was largely due to Naz being a complete socket out of the ring and burning his bridges with those around him rather than his innate ability in the ring. He lost control of his weight altogether in the lead up to that fight and lost a ridiculous amount of weight overnight to make the weight, can't remember exact details but I think it was close to 20lbs in the last few days.

sadly Cus D'Amato's peek-a-boo style is a dieing art. The only trainer who tries to keep it alive is Kevin Rooney and he hasn't got anyone that talented in his stable.

It's very taxing, requires a lot of stamina and favours shorter fighters like Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson.

Tyson should keep it going and train fighters in peek-a-boo, as only him and Kevin Rooney have all the knowledge regarding it. But Mike doesn't want anything to do with boxing these days..

Teddy Atlas has some knowledge on it having trained under Cus and Kevin for some time

Thanks.
I just watch his fights and it's just amazing to watch whereas all the current boxers are very wooden and boring in comparison.

His ability to have almost all his power whilst punching with his elbows tucked in is amazing and you just don't see any boxers using the uppercut like he did.

Tyson Fury needs a fur coat no more or less than you need to eat meat. The cruelty suffered in animal agriculture is every bit as bad. People who defend the fur trade will tell you the animals are killed humanely before being skinned, people who defend animal ag will tell you the same of those that end up on your plate. The reality is that in both cases that regularly does not happen and in any case, there is no humane way to kill something that does not want to die because you value their taste or warmth over their life.

Even if it wasn't, there's no shame in going the distance with Barrera. He's an all time great of the sport.

Floyd Patterson is worth a YouTube binge too - but you can see why that style requires an absolute genetic freak of an athlete that is on the shorter side. Peek-a-boo is all about getting the opponent out of there as quickly and effectively as possible, with (to quote Cus) "every punch thrown with bad intentions" - not one punch is a pitty-pat

I was there. Will never forget it.

No-one gave Benn a hope in hell. McClellan suffered life changing injuries. Benn collapsed afterwards, pissing blood.

As awful as his injuries were/are McClellan was a nasty piece of work out of the ring.

He looked mean at the face off in the ring. The first round - how did Benn survive?
