Wow, I'm 65 and have the usual back stuff but nothing like that, what a bloody shame. That would make me quite angry with the world I think. Hope you are bearing up OK otherwise.

Blackp. I'm lucky, and I consider myself lucky. I am very comfortable in life, have travelled the world and seen a lot, good and bad, seen a lot of poor people in Haiti, Gambia, Africa as a whole. Been in a war. Have seen sweat shops in China, and out and out luxury in California. I've a bad back and cant play golf! I am lucky.

Off to play Old Head and Fota park this weekend, first round at Old Head tomorrow and I'm buzzing - have caddys and all

Somewhat remarkably the weather looks ideal too! - 20*, sunny interludes and wind speeds of <6kn although given it looks as dangerous as anything, with loads of cliffs and long grass to negotiate i doubt my scoring will be up to much!

Played my best 9 holes yesterday. 41, 6 over. Not a silly low score, but just was able to keep the ball in play and sink a few longish puts for par.

Bridport's like that, stray off the fairways and you're in the elephant grass.

Another day, another new club in the bag!

I decided to upgrade my trusty Wilson D100 hybrids. They are getting on a bit so it was time for a change.

Being as impressed as i was with my new Wilson D7 driver i decided to go for the D7 21deg hybrid. Picked up an ex demo one for a good price. Took it for a practice round and holy mackerel it was a hook machine. The face was sat very closed at address but when struck well (and straight) it bloody flew!

Decided i didnt like it so shipped it off to golfbidder for pretty much the same price i bought it for. Result.

I then played a few rounds with just my driver 5-sw irons and putter leaving the hybrids out completely. Teed off mainly with the 5 iron and couldnt help but notice, quite obviously really, of how many fairways i was hitting. Which then got my thinking about driving irons again. If only i could find a driving iron that i got on with.

Off to ebay i went to have a browse....

I didnt want to spend a fortune and came across the DynaCraft driving iron. A choice of 3 heads (18,21,23), choice of shaft, grip size and colour all for £50. Read a few reviews and seemed positive so placed an order for a 21 degree, stiff shaft and blue grip (to match with my Blue cobra iron grips).

It turned up yesterday so headed down the range with it. First impressions was the head shape and size is very simliar to those on my Cobra irons. Took a swing and crikey the ball took off with a lovely little draw. Maybe a fluke so hit another ball.....same result. Unbelievably easy to hit. Got talking to the fella in the bay next to me and he was complimenting the ball flight and distance. Handed him the club to have a go and the same result. He, like myself, had never heard of DynaCraft before but thankfully i'm not a golf snob so it went straight into the bag for today's round.

Needless to say the results on the course were the same as the range. Very impressed with it and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to bag a driving iron.

Picked up the D3 on Wednesday, and so far I am pretty impressed. I am still hitting it quite high (with a Extra Stiff shaft, and 9.5 degree low spin head...), but it is long and very straight. Much prefer the smaller head to my previous 460 cc Driver, feel like I'm controlling it rather than the other way round. This will be my last purchase for a while (apart from maybe a cart bag, but I'm not confident one will fit in a 1 Series Coupé) as I have my bag just where I want it.

Also had a 9 hole playing lesson on Wednesday. Very interesting, and it seems I am on the right track with my swing lessons, just need to keep my lower body involved on the way through and stop getting stuck. More worryingly, it appears I've played golf for 30 years, 20 of those to a single figure level, without ever figuring out how to aim properly.....

Managed my season best tonight. Quick 18 holes after work with the folks. Not bad for 12 - 15 rounds a year. Shame about the 9! Makes me want to play every weekend again, if only!

Evening all,

Haven’t popped my head in for nearly a year now. Did a Pistonheads meet ever happen in 2018?

How’s everybody’s game going?

Somehow won every single day, averaging 34 points, and now just landed in Heathrow a broken man, with work at 06:30 tomorrow morning.

Only real downside was today, -1 gross after 7 - finished shooting my 9 handicap after 3-putting the last (did it on 2 other holes too however). Courses, accommodation, company, everything was epic. Was even an “Uber” helicopter for taking you between courses.

The Old Head was immense:

Even Fota Park, host of the Irish open a few ears back, wasn’t bad either:

my whole life has changed. You learn how to put yours socks/knicks on differently. Pick crap up off the floor, tying up shoelaces. fk picking up heavy stuff. Making sure you dont hurt your back as the above is a pita but going to the crapper a right......

I loved golf. Won a few comps, was a Captain of my society. Played for my Command whilst a serviceman. Played a cpl of Open courses reasonably, (jeez they are long and piggin tight). I might just go for another game sometime whilst the weather is warm to see how it goes, but I just know I'll be paying like an 18 h'capper, if I'm lucky...(not slagging off 18 h'cappers but when you were 6, its a heck of a differance).

Had another MRI last year and fellah says my lower back is disintergrating. Oh and played a LOT of volleyball as well! I'm only 62.
Very sorry to hear this, I have a similar if not quite as bad story, in that I have no cartilage left in either ankle. Op in 2015 changed my life from ~4 rounds a month, to a couple a year, in a buggy :-/

Let's hope some medical miracle gets us up and playing again properly in the future.

I played pennant park last week in north wales. Stunning course, and certainly the best kept course I have played (not saying much) and all for £17.50. Highly recommend it. Very undulating and challenging in places, but playable. Played well for me on the front 9, then made some silly off the tee errors on the back 9 which cost me.

Would love to play it again.

At the moment my irons and short game are ok, but I cannot hit my driver which is almost certainly costing me as with my hybrid I max out at 200 yards off the tee which just isn’t long enough.

The highlight of the Open so far has to be this crappy Vaxhall SUV getting stuck in the sand.

It’s going to need one hell of a sand wedge to get it out before the tide comes in biggrin

Could be worse. Duval had a 15 on the 5th!

He tripled the 18th for a +8 round !

Duval's 15 was reduced to 13 but he still shot 19 over, a cosy life back in the commentary box beckons.

Tiger on +7.

Brutal course if you're even slightly off your game.

I'm backing Stenson but got a sneaky feeling about Lowry.
