First thing to notice with the run chase is

THERE IS NO TIME PRESSURE

So, given that first law, lets see how England bat.

Play yourself in, grind it out for today and then see where you are at stumps.

It's a no brainer.

The Australians will bowl well you'd expect, so need to stand firm.

How about looking to the counties for a current captain - James Vince, Sam Billings, Rory Burns, Tom Abell, Steven Patterson or Ben Brown?
One of Surrey's captains has a pretty good record, that Finch chap, good with the bat, can open, oh wait..... scratchchin

Will England last the whole day? Have the players realised its a test match and not 20 over game? Will Root score any runs?

Come on England, time for someone to step up like butcher did in Headingley in 2001 and not only save the match but win it!

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2001/aug/20/cric...

Obviously it helped then when Gillespie declared a bit early but never mind that.

Let’s remember

the article said:
"Today was the day we have been waiting for all summer," said a visibly relieved Hussain afterwards, and the crowd cheered in agreement.

Butcher, who admitted to lunching only on "a cup of coffee and a couple of cigarettes" was a Colossus at the crease for England, and together with captain Nasser, he seized back the initiative for England when earlier, at 33-2, it was very much with the visitors.

The exhausted Surrey left-hander said of his century: "I can't remember it to be honest." But for the overjoyed Headingley crowd that witnessed it, his innings will never be forgotten.

It was a statistician's wet dream: England's second-highest fourth innings total to win a Test match, their highest in England, the second highest at Headingley, and the joint 13th highest of all time.

Roy has probably learnt as much in that 20 minutes about test cricket that his previous time at the crease put together.
He looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights when he walked to the crease, looked like he’d rather be anywhere else.
However,he only played what was close to him, and should have learnt that there’s huge value for shots out there when mid on prods can go through point for four.
It’s now or never for him.

Agreed.

Some of the England players have such a ODI mindset they should treat it as such, basically they need 359 runs from 240ish overs. If it doesn’t need to be hit, don’t try and hit it unless it’s minimal risk!!

Good point El Stovey. Lets see if England know their history.

The lack of foot movement with our batsmen is an absolute disgrace.

Roy shouldn’t be opening but Hazelwood, Pattinson and Cummins have been awesome, how on Earth have they only just been put together as a unit? Apparently they all used to bowl together as kids or at the Cricket academy?

I think they said it was due to injury and always one being injured.

Roy shouldn’t have been given the opportunity to embarrass himself again. He’s a fine one day player, but can’t seem to grasp the concept of not having to hit everything in a test match, the whole England side should be ashamed of this performance, I can just about remember the last time we put out such a shower of st, and I don’t think even they managed this complete cluster fk.

Why are they still playing at loose balls and/or trying to get quick singles? Here is the everyman guide to Test cricket. Ball outside leg = tickle off the hip for a run or two. Ball outside off = LEAVE IT. Chance for a quick single: LEAVE IT.

Denly already up to the heady heights of his record-breaking first innings total. Nothing can go wrong from here.

I reckon England will be all out for under 150. Selectors will panic but do little about it. Problem they have is 6 or more could and should be dropped but they won't have the balls to do it.
