Good recovery by England. Scores are level at lunch, so in effect they are now starting the second innings at 0-1. I would now expect England to take control as the Irish bowlers suffer in the heat.
Roy with a 47 ball Test 50 on debut. I imagine he is going to help himself to the wide variety of buffet bowling on offer this afternoon. Moeen has indeed forgotten how to bat, he hasn’t made a 50 in more than fifty innings, in any format. I have been complaining about Moeen for a while now. He just isn’t the player he was, he seems to be good for dressing room harmony though, so he keeps getting picked.
We have Stokes to come back I guess for the batting. Bairstow I can forgive, he is such a good player, just one of those games for him. He will be back up for it in the ashes.
But Root running out Denny...what the heck was that, village and then some

Well at least we batted a whole day ! Might be the only time we manage it this summer !
It’s probably enough to win this match, assuming we get Porterfield early. Root needs to have a long think about his team. Do Buttler and Stokes come back ? Is Jimmy fit? should Moeen play ? Stone and Leech have played themselves into contention for a spot. Does Denly get the whole summer ?
Lots of choices hard to see a clear 11 at the moment.

Went yesterday...it was surreal watching that morning session. Some great bowling but bloody hell we were st.
I have no idea who else there is but I just don’t think Burns looks anything like a test opener...way to agreessive with his movements for me. That really high/vertical back lift just seems to make life harder when your playing against bowlers who can make the ball talk.

This might sound daft, but...I have no idea who else there is but I just don’t think Burns looks anything like a test opener...way to agreessive with his movements for me. I wonder if Bairstow has a need for an aggressive partner when he's batting (and for the odd rocket up his arse - something Root's teams seem to suffer from).
I know Roy managed next to nowt in the first innings, but I'd be seriously tempted to play Roy and Bairstow as the openers for a few tests. Let them play their own game and throw convention out. Then re-stack behind them.
We need to do something different up front. We've been looking for old school for years.
I still think the captaincy was and is too soon for Root. Too young. Not grizzled enough.
Stokes definitely needs to come back into the side. Buttler too.
Curran up the order maybe.
It's a real shame Pope's injured. Dislocating your shoulder's nasty.
Now totally agree with Gargamel on Moeen. Needs to be put out to pasture.
If Jimmy's fit, he has to play IMO.
What I liked about Jack Leach's knock yesterday was that knew his limitations and his shot selection was quite intelligent, in contrast to the one day specialists who seem much more hot headed and gung ho, trying to go big too soon and not play themselves in /Boycott/Vaughan/. Interesting that the upper and middle order still got out cheaply despite the ball being well past it's best by the time they faced it. Jason Roy made a good case for his selection.
I'm not too dismayed really, you can learn a lot from a loss, although England do seem curiously resistant to learning from their mistakes. On a team level, England are really missing Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes. We still don't know who to open with, our opening bowling attack is elderly and is unlikely to weather five Tests, we lack a decent spinner and the captaincy is decidedly erratic. Apart from that we're doing ok.
