Joe Root declared, then undeclared just now. Is he allowed to do that? I'd have thought it was for Root to wait to check that the catch wasn't off a no ball before declaring rather than getting to change his mind.

Rabada banned from 4th Test for unnecessarily exuberant celebration. Bit petty - spoils a good contest.
OK that is sort of true, it was deemed a level 1 offence and therefore was one demerit point. However if you have 4 within 24 months then you get a suspension.

Rabada previously served a two match suspension for shoulder barging Steve Smith, sine when he has accumulated another three points. Two of which are for exactly the same offence - Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.

15% match fee and 1 point.

Buttler got the same fine and point, he just doesn't have any others in the last 24 months.

edit, I should have siad, I also think its bullst, he didn't make any gestures or ruse remarks, he just screamed ! I have seen Stokes and Jimmy A do very similar.

Rabada copped for it anyway, just admitted it and didn't even bother the match referee !
Rabada's previous three demerit points were all for the same thing, even though a couple of them were for over-celebrating Australian wickets - they still count.

So, on the basis that he knew that he was on the brink of a ban, and he does the same thing again, and gets a ban, it's his own stupid fault.

Anyway. 499-9 declared. Well played.

Looking forward to the highlights tonight. Been listening to Talksport at work all day. It sounded very exciting.

Maiden Century from the Pope, just 22 and 15 days old. Youngest since Cook waaaay back in 2006 !

Great innings, well played
Am struggling to think of the last player who has looked as good as him this early in there test career...long time since the like of Strauss and Trott made century on debut and I am thinking they were a lot older. He’s a fixture in the team now.

Stokes also got his 4,000th test run today....third quickest all rounder to do the 4,000 runs and 1oo wickets double after Sobers and Kallis and ahead of Botham. Not bad company!

Bess currently has 4 wickets for 9 runs....

Conditions right in our favor today.

Bess now has a Michelle, and the only wickets to be taken this innings.

He's also taken seven times more wickets in this series than he's scored runs.

Nortje is trying to tough it out, 14 off 88 deliveries.

With so many runs on the board I’d be asking Wood to let Nortje have it when play restarts.

I fear this rain could ruin the rest of the day for us. Hopefully we can get back on about 1:30-2 and get the rest of them out before the close of day 3.

Brilliant..
Rain forecast, surely we have to enforce the follow on

So what's the thought. Bowlers relatively fresh this early? Enforce follow on? Or knock a quick hundred and fifty and declare? More risk in the latter decision imo. But then I'm no cricket genius strategist.

Surely got to enforce the follow on. Ball is swinging, it’s day 4 and rain possible

They trail by 291 so had to enforce and hopefully we wont need to bat again

The rain means that enforcing the follow on is the sensible thing to do. I'll provide enough rest time for our bowlers.
