Root remains a terrible captain apart from all the others we haven’t got.
He has also dropped out of the top 10 in the test batsmen ranking too for the first time since August 2014. He is averaging 27 with the bat this year compared to 47 over his career, and just under 40, compared to 52 before he took over from Alastair Cook.
Since Anderson has not gone down south Broad seems to have had a fresh breath of life. I get the feeling all that talk of him being spent whilst Anderson was there was a bit to premature.
This match is so slow going I am staying up to listen but flitting around all the other parts of the forum.
Already been banned from the shooting matters and Donald Trump threads .... not connected I assure you and if this match plods on I might be banned from the South Africa thread ... which would be ironic before I can mention cricket in there come Boxing day ...

At last, a couple of tons in the same innings. All we seem to have discovered in the last 12 months is how much we miss Cook at the top of the order - ok, he went through some fairly disastrous lapses in form, but he would somehow grind out an ugly century, and he'd be back.
The problem with the England Test side (and others) is that all of the players are now brought up on white-ball cricket, and no longer have the "over my dead body" attitude required to grind down the opposing bowlers and build a score. We're not alone, but India have the likes of Kohli and Dhoni who can build an innings, and everybody else joins in and bats around them.
Test match cricket has become unfashionable. Spectators and broadcasters want the instant gratification and ease of showing limited-over games, and the players are brought up accordingly. I enjoy a good ODI or T20, but I also enjoy the changing conditions and attrition which makes Tests so compelling.

It's being described as the worst drop in Test history. Looking forward to seeing it!

Same old same old.
The selectors have been following the English football FA selection mentality for too long. And Root is not captain material. Was given that role waaaaaay too soon.
The team is in grave danger of unraveling if the selectors don't get a grip, which should include telling Root to focus on his batting.
We have some great players. But we don't have a team to string together. And this has been a problem for our side for a good while now.
Still chuffed that we lifted the World Cup this year, and little will ever beat that final (and whooping the Aussies in the semi). But we now need to decide where the teams are going from here. Major change required.

Not sure its that bad, Denly is making a decent go of it, Leach is ill, Buttler injured. Jimmy A will play in SA. The selectors have been following the English football FA selection mentality for too long. And Root is not captain material. Was given that role waaaaaay too soon.

Biggest concern is Woakes cannot bowl on flat decks and Root is not the right captain for Archer to be a strike bowler.
Playing no spinner here was a terrible error.

https://twitter.com/SkyCricket/status/120163109211...OK I give up, where is the TMS coverage of South Africa vs England
Went to BBC Sounds 5 extra, nope, overnight coverage of Crims Vs Kiwis and some bish bash bosh during daytime.
Tried BBC website, then the Sports app, then googled which led me to 5Live, nothing in any schedule.
I can see from TMS Twitter that Aggers is in Pretoria but now at a loss. It says follow from BBC Sports app but not listed on their coverage guide.
Sky can go and swivel btw.

The match hasn’t started yet.
Says a poster just a couple of minutes before the toss when it's not showing on any schedules, apart from Sky.Anything helpful to add?
Stokes playing.
Broad and Archer have had several days in bed with a bug.
Woakes, Leech still in quarantine.
Jimmy A just had presentation for 150th test, amazing for a fast bowler.
