Hi all, started playing about a month ago and game is coming along ok. My current clubs I found at the tip so i would like to upgrade. Tried some cheap irons (aspire was the make) today and straight away i was hitting it 30 yards further with a 7. Can anyone recommend some decent forgiving irons (been advised to get steel by my coach) that I could maybe pick up second hand? Budget is around £100-£150. Ta

Can't really go wrong with these.
Cheers, checked out some reviews and it seems these are very good for a beginner. Are those yours on eBay?

Also does anyone know why the coach would recommend steel vs graphite?

No, they are not mine. Just some I found in your price bracket that are perfect for beginners.

Graphite v Steel is entirely personal preference. Griphite iron shafts are every bit as good as steel now. But the older ones weren't.

Graphite shafts are typically lighter so should be easier to swing, so may improve clubhead speed. The only way to tell which are best for you is to try them.

I'm just about to experiment with this as it happens, to see if I find it easier to play with the graphite shafts. I've found a set of irons the same as mine with graphite shafts. I just need to go down the range now to compare them. For me, part of the fun of golf is experimenting with equipment.

Just back from a fine weekend in East Sussex.

We played Piltdown GC (heathland with lots of heather), Sedlescombe GC (Parkland) and Seaford GC (Windy Coastal Parkland). All quite tough courses compared to my usual ones. I scored 98, 101, 103 respectively off 21 hcp.

Based out of Eastbourne, each was less than 30 minutes away.

Highly recommended for a weekend trip away, especially since Turkey trip was cancelled.
I did a pro am at Ifield with the Assistant Pro from Piltdown. Supposed to be nice there.

Noob question time: Ordered a driver off ebay (ping g15) and it came very poorly packaged and wondering if it was damaged in transit or designed as such.

The shaft angle seems very forward in relation to the club head.

The shaft seems straight when looking down the barrel and the club head does angle out the shaft but seems aggressively forward.

For future reference: DO NOT buy from justgolfclubsuk on ebay. The club came in a box with nothing other than a carrier bag wrapped around the head. No other packaging. It came naturally 3 days late with myherpes and the box was crushed. The club was just rattling around loose with absolutely no protection other than the carrier bag around the head.
The main reason for this is the ball position in your stance changes depending on the different clubs and shots being played.
Imagine a line running through the middle of your legs at 90 degrees to the target line, most short rons can be played with this central ball position. Playing longer irons or fairway woods, the ball position is moved more towards the left foot to encourage a more sweeping clubhead path and pitches, knock down shots, chip'n'runs are often played more towards the right right foot to keep the ball lower.
The usual ball position for a driver is in line with the instep of the left foot perpendicular to the ball to target line.
Biomechanically, your hands will be "behind" the ball, because if you try and get your hands into the same 90degree position along that perpendicular line it will compromise and backswing, timing, weight transfer etc and the whole upper body will have to compensate.
So the shaft is angled forward relative to the clubhead, but when the clubhead is placed behind a correctly positioned ball for a driver, the angles created should prompt the hands to keep to a more neutral position that is used for almost all other shots.
The ideal shoulder, arm, club shaft position at impact for a driver will remain in a straight line.

Lost my scorecards out of my back pocket recently, just needed one more 9 hole card to submit 54 holes for a handicap. Gutted or what. Avge 9 hole score was around 43/45 shots.
Started again today, rained for 18 holes, scored 50 and 41. The 50 was down to a 9 on a par 5, didn't hit a clean shot on it.
Anyway, anyone have any idea what handicap I would have got on these scores? I've no idea how it's worked out. Thanks.
Can only talk for the existing handicap system that's about to be replaced, but handicaps are worked out on what the Standard Scratch Score on the course you were playing. So just some rough numbers:

43/45 for 9 holes would work out as 86 - 90 for 18. So if we assume SSS of 71, your handicap would be in the 15 - 19 range, based on those scores you mention. Your club would probably take an average of the scores you submitted, so you'd probably end up with a handicap of around 17 or 18.

All bets are off with the new system, as most clubs are still getting their heads round it - can't see it being hugely different in your case though.

I've just dug out the G15 I have in my office, and it does look similar to what's in the picture, but if you're uncomfortable with it I'd look into sending it back. If you're anywhere near Stafford and still looking for a G15 to replace it drop me a PM, I'm sure we can sort something out.

Some drivers are set like that to help with counteracting a slice. It's highly unlikely to have been bent in the post. The shaft would snap before the head would bend.

Judging by the bog of the overflow car park it doesn't surprise me but tee boxes and greens were in top condition.

I play there once or twice a year in club matches. In the last 5 years they've spent over £500k on improving the course. Plays lovely now.

They're forged, I wouldn't worry. A forged Mona Lisa looks lovely too.

The above is a crap joke of course...

It happens to everyone. Golf is hard.

I would strip is right back and go through the steps, grip, posture, alignment. Maybe start with some chip shots, and pitch shots. Hit a couple of those, make sure direct and strike are ok. The. Move into full shots
Indeed. Didn't expect such a backstep though.

Been watching videos this morning, and practising out in the garden with the air balls. Seems to have worked to some degree. Think the issue seems to have stemmed from setting the wrist on the the backswing.

Need/want to sort it out sharpish.
Struggling to connect the problem of setting the wrists on backswing to your stance feeling all wrong. But, be careful to avoid correcting a problem with another problem.

As previous poster suggests, Id just look to work, literally, on one thing at a time per practice session. Get the basics sorted now so you have the best foundation to develop your game.

As you're quite new to the long walk spoiled, may I suggest buying a cheap and cheerful mid iron, comparable to your own irons in terms of design and game characteristics...get ye local range or club pro to slap on a grip trainer and use that as your main practice weapon. They are v good at grooving in the correct hand/finger position, which in turn should help with wrist set.

A previous thread contributor put up the below youtube, and by all accounts a decent swinger, but before each shot there's a reset and he starts again from grip, stance, alignment, just to keep that feeling and groove of the basics.

Had a phone call yesterday evening to say my new Driver was finally here smile

Went to pick it up and hit a few balls at the range - wow, I'm impressed. Much easier to keep straight than my old 917, and an extra 15 yards longer according to TopTracer to boot.

It must be good then.

I was struggling yesterday with an old Ping G5 for the first 9 so started hitting my mate's 917. By comparison it seems impossible to hit a properly wild shot. A push seems as bad as it gets.

The G5 might also have a 460cc head but it doesn't let you get away with very much at all in comparison.
