I also had new (first) wedge day but slightly less glamorous, After getting nowhere trying to use the g10 pitching wedge for everything less than a 100yds I went for the famous in certain circles Costco clubs, Kirkland 52, 56, 60. A quick trip to the driving range, and they play quite nicely.

Most of my bad shots are for the same reason. I like to pick an alignment spot on my intended target line. If I'm not feeling comfortable or committed it generally doesn't end well. One of the things I need to get better at is backing off and starting again when not feeling comfortable.
If I had a pound for every golfer I'd had the "of course because if you aren't comfortable you should step away" conversation with...I could probably afford the Sports Psychologist I need to convince myself it's ok to do the same
Must admit I'm on a mission this year to try to avoid the 2 or 3 blow ups I tend to have in a medal round, Saturday's medal was a case in point:
Two big numbers caused by 2 bad swings with my 3 wood, a snap hook on 7 and big horrible push slice OOB on 13 (then missed a 2 foot putt for a 6). Massively frustrating considering how well I played for most of the rest, but it's typical for me, 6 awesome holes in a row then a shocker.
Both bad swings were far worse than anything I'm capable of on the range, which adds to the bemusement.
Had a lesson a few weeks ago which is starting te feel better after a few range sessions.
Last night was the first time I'd managed 9 holes without a double or a triple for as long as I can remember. I would have liked to have carried on, but had to get home. I only took 6 clubs too.
Frustratingly I 3 putted the first and mised a couple of decent birdie putts.
I got lucky on 5 and 8 finding my tee shot after double crossing and hooking the ball miles left. But played sensible and got back into position.
Hopefully I'm finding a swing and some form just in time to Play Woodhall Spa next week.

Went up for a hit tonight, loved it. It’s windy as fk but good fun. I’m coming from the inside (matron) and it’s been a pain in the arse when I’ve been flipping my wrists with this too, but I’m feeling that keeping my elbows together on the follow through is a more effective feel. I maybe have been breaking various body parts and exposing funny bits of the club with the shorter shots, and flipping wrists with the full swing.

Aka most courses in the UK right now, I thought he was joking to begin with.I do think they're often spoiled with the manicured semi rough and all those folk spotting for them. Most courses I play at currently any off fairway tee shots are punished by either a lost ball or a wrist snapping punishing chip out of very difficult rough.
So, now 9 months into playing golf (3 months of which were lockdown so no play), and yesterday had my best round ever at my home club, Headingley Golf Club.
Went round in 86 which is 15 over, 42 out (37 par) and 44 in (34 par).
Got to say I'm pretty happy with that, and is not an easy course (slope rating 137 I believe).

Excellent rapid progress. I'd say a majority of golfers can't shoot 86 after 20 years, never mind 6 months.Went round in 86 which is 15 over, 42 out (37 par) and 44 in (34 par).

(was it a genuine to-the-rules 86? No 'Can't find it, I'll just drop a ball here and call it three off the tee' type stuff?)

Absolutely 'genuine'. I lost one ball off the tee (out of bounds) on the 15th (par 4) so was 3 off the tee, and recorded a 7, which was my worst hole.(was it a genuine to-the-rules 86? No 'Can't find it, I'll just drop a ball here and call it three off the tee' type stuff?)
I has just 'clicked' over the past couple of weeks, and thought I had a sub 90 score in there somewhere, but didn't expect mid 80's.

Agreed, that is a superb score for someone who hasn’t played for very long, I’m guessing your really putting in the hours of practice to get there as that seems to be key to improving?(was it a genuine to-the-rules 86? End of the garden ....Have bought a 'Mevo' launch monitor, and going for a lesson every couple of weeks on now certain aspects (yesterdays being the latest, and spent 45 minutes on getting out of bunkers).
