Thats a good knock round Headingley.
Find a way to manage those doubles into bogies and you'll be knocking on the door of breaking 80.
I'll be happy to go sub 90 on my next round, and again, etc, etc.Find a way to manage those doubles into bogies and you'll be knocking on the door of breaking 80.
There were a few annoying mistakes, for example the tee shot on 15th which was mainly due to be annoyed about being stuck behind 4 old guys messing around every hole. That said, to get a 7 from that position was good.
Irons are going really well, chipping great, and putting definately getting much better the more I get used to the speed of the greens. I'm also managing the course better, ie not automatically pulling driver, but still not hitting my driver and 5 wood great.
Birthday next week and have a Taylormade Sim2 Adjustible Hybrid (4) as a present, so hopefully that becomes a very useful club.

Excellent rapid progress. I'd say a majority of golfers can't shoot 86 after 20 years, never mind 6 months.
(was it a genuine to-the-rules 86? No 'Can't find it, I'll just drop a ball here and call it three off the tee' type stuff?)
Absolutely 'genuine'. I lost one ball off the tee (out of bounds) on the 15th (par 4) so was 3 off the tee, and recorded a 7, which was my worst hole.(was it a genuine to-the-rules 86? No 'Can't find it, I'll just drop a ball here and call it three off the tee' type stuff?)
I has just 'clicked' over the past couple of weeks, and thought I had a sub 90 score in there somewhere, but didn't expect mid 80's.

I think this is common when breaking 90. You shoot loads of 90/91 rounds frustrated you couldn't squeeze in an 89. Then the round you finally break 90 is in the mid 80s.

One shouldn't judge one's progress and ability on the outcome of one round. However, breaking 100,90,80,70 are big golfing milestones. It should provide conformation you have the ability and give you confidence going forward.
But you are right, golf usually finds a way to bring you back down to earth.

Indeed, but I want to hear the next round score! I've lost count of all the 'this time I've really cracked it' rounds followed immediately by shockers! Good luck on your journey and well played.
Fully expecting it to be appauling. Did say to my mate that I should plausibly retire from the game now as don't see much improvement from that.Hobo said:

I used to hate making birdie on the 1st hole. The round can only get worse from there
Can agree with that.1995, played in the County Championships for my handicap category (was 12-18 at the time) and played Queens Park in Bournemouth. Very formal start, announcement of names etc - first hole was about 340 yards, par four. Nervous as hell, I took a 7 iron and played safely down the middle, about 140 yards. Out of sight of the watching spectators, I then creamed a 5 wood off the fairway to 12 feet from the hole and rattled in for a birdie. Leading after one hole....
Finished mid table in the end.
Just found this thread, makes for some good reading. I had to give up golf about 4-5 years ago after tearing my rotator cuff. Started playing again about 4 months ago, playing a full 18 for the first time tomorrow in quite a while, a good mix of nervous and excited.
I'm in a strange situation where I have more confidence with my woods than my irons, my iron shots are either great or terrible, no middle ground.
Playing with a friend early doors, think we'll have the place to ourselves but I'll just play double par max to keep up the pace of play, should I need to. Really looking forward to getting back out there!

My best round was a 74 (2 over) when I was off 18. Just a freak round and never broke 80 again. 3 under for the 4 par 3s. Shame it wasn't in a comp!

Be careful, it's a slippery slope. I bought a net. Then a mat. Then a Mevo. Then my wife told me I couldn't leave it all on the lawn. So...
Possibly not-coincidentally, I also shot under 90 for the first time last night
Nice net setup. Something I wouldn't mind doing myself.Possibly not-coincidentally, I also shot under 90 for the first time last night
My friend has a MEVO+...I borrowed it during last lockdown for a week, my god I was so tempted to get one.

I'm sure I could slice a 3 wood through that hole in the top right corner Possibly not-coincidentally, I also shot under 90 for the first time last night
Edit - looks like I'd be ok, when you zoom in it's two layers of netting...

So after having ordered some nice shiny irons with stiff shafts I am now well aware that my woods are probably not really ideal for me. In fact the guy at the shop described the shafts as being a bit like a fishing rod, so that means I need at least a driver, if not some woods, with a stiff shaft.
Problem is I've spent all my money and have no intention of spending the sort of money that new drivers cost. I've had a look at Golf Bidder and there are about eleventy million options.
How on earth do I work out what I want to look at in terms of 2nd hand drivers if I don't know what I want? All I know is I need something that's less flexible than the 20 year old clubs I already have.

Just go and test a load at American golf or any shop with no intention of buying and then buy that previous generation model.Problem is I've spent all my money and have no intention of spending the sort of money that new drivers cost. You can usually reflog stuff if it's not successful and mostly an established brand as well.
OR just buy new shafts for the woods/drivers.
