Englands bowling has been pretty decent throughout this tour, it isn't their fault we are struggling to bat. It must be annoying for people like Jack Leach, who is in impressive form at the moment that we have collapsed so regularly, especially as that straightens the way they bowl, we're having to set defensive rather than offensive fields because the margins are so tight.

I’m just amazed at the ineptitude of the batting on both sides to be honest. When England got 200 in the first innings I thought here we go again India will pile on some runs but for all the criticism of our batting India haven’t done much better. So far...

I wish I understood the umpire's call rule. That Bess lbw shout ball was hitting the stumps. confused
It just means the umpires original decision stands I think, I assume where the DRS is showing it was marginal either way.

It was right on the line, if the on field decision had been out and India had reviewed it, it would have been out. Basically more than half the ball has to be hitting the stumps to reverse an on field 'not out' decision.

It did appear that the marginal umpire's call area includes the stumps, but not the bails. With the bails it looked like more than a 50% hit.

Looks painful for England, 41c and Pant whacking it all over the place.

They showed a graphic when they were discussing it later on, and it is actually the bottom of the bails that forms the height line for decisions, which is below the top of the stumps themselves. So to have more than half-ball contact with the bottom of the bails you would need almost full-ball contact with the top.

If the on-field decision is not out, then the remaining stumps area for review is very small.

Indeed.

53 ahead now.

It’s really got away from them since the break.

137 for 1 off 28 overs says all you need to know, especially since the new ball.
Ominous

In a few hours we go from still in it to pretty much out of it and Pant’s innings was great. The decisions went his way but he is a class act no doubt. We are still in the same place we have been. We need our batsman to post a total that puts pressure on India batting last. But... with limited options in our bowling every one needs to perform and unfortunately Bess has been a seriously weak link. He is really struggling and must be a nightmare for Root. The seamers could do no more. They were excellent but if you have a mainline spinner low on confidence then the batsman will sense it and go for him. Not looking good. If we could only get 200 when the wicket was at it’s best how can we get the 350ish we will need? Solution. Bess needs to reverse his form and the batsman need to suddenly score big.

No denying the quality of that innings.

3 quick wickets and I still think it could be game on.

No, I don't think so, we'll be all done by breakfast, India won't even need to come back.

Shambolic, absolutely shambolic, not to have learnt any lessons from any of the previous matches. Australia will be licking their lips with anticipation for the Ashes Series.
