Went down to American Golf this evening and tried a few pairs on. These seemed the most comfortable so I bought them

Also came back with a new putter
Funny how that happens. I came back with a new putter, a box of balls, a brolly, a towel and a new set of custom fit irons on order!!https://www.americangolf.co.uk/clothing-shoes/shoe...

And the shoes
What did you tell the OH that you bought? Just a pair of shoes and some balls?

OP there is a dedicated golf forum within Sports that you should find useful.

Thanks, I couldn’t find that when browsing so didn’t think there was one.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
It's a single golf thread. I am not sure its sensible that all topics related to golf are discussed within a single thread.

Another vote for Footjoy stuff generally. I've been slapping dubbin on my FJ shoes for a few years now and with the occasional re-spike they're still doing the biz. The FJ socks I bought in a moment of madness in the pro shop have turned out to be the best socks I've ever had, not just for golf either.
Another vote for FootJoy. I use a pair of black leather FJ traditional shoes, with spider plastic spikes. Had them for over 20 years and the most comfortable shoes I own. Only problem I have with them now is getting the spikes out that need replaced, they are so tight, and the holes for the extractor tool are shot. Also agree on the FJ socks - I got a few pairs for xmas, and wear them all the time.Pieman68 said:

I’ve never had a proper set of clubs. My current clubs are made by Penn who always specialised in tennis equipment and only briefly decided to make golf clubs. Now I can’t stop thinking about new clubs

I have, and can thoroughly recommend;
Footjoy Pro SL (for winter/wet)
Nike 90G (for summer/dry)
The nikes are a tight fit initially, but loosen up well and are supremely comfortable whilst having the added advantage of looking like a trainer so can be worn in the pub after, etc, without looking like a complete tool

It's a rabbit hole. Like you I've almost exclusively bought used clubs with no clue about lie, shafts etc. The high point in my game was a few years ago when I bought some Ping G10s on the advice of SpeckledJim. Sold those to my mate who was just starting and went through. Bought some new Benrosses from AG, didn't get on with them, so bought some old Mizuno forged irons which felt amazing on the 5% of shots I hit properly. Concluded I wasn't consistent enough to use them so have just sprung for a full set of Ping G425s. While I've been waiting for them to arrive I bought a set of Donnay Evo shovels off ebay for £12 (!) and cannot believe how easy they are to hit. I'm praying the Pings will be at least as good as the Donnays as they're 150 times more expensive
Problem is without knowing much about the differences between the clubs I have no idea what to look at, there are far too many different options.Pieman68 said:

I hit the G425s which felt absolutely amazing but I couldn't push it that far budget wise. Also tried the SIM2 but they felt a bit heavy in the head and quite hard off the face. Ended up with the Benross Delta X Steels with KB105 shaft and Lamkin grips. On the Simulator I added 30% distance, 50% height and 50% spin from my old clubs because they were second hand and too short

Decided it was time to get the 425s when I looked at the grouping of half a dozen balls I hit with the 7 iron and could hardly believe it. I have a rotten swing, no two are the same but you'd never have known it. It's a lot of cash for sure but if you have a decent pro they will give you time to pay it off, mine's letting me do it over six months, no paperwork, all on trust. Anyway, we're hijacking a shoe thread here so I'll get off now.

The only way to know is to go and try. I got mine on 12 months interest free so all in worked out about £56 a month with the other bits
I'm just gutted I've got to wait for them to turn up

In that case - I actually got a better grouping with the Benross but lost about 6 yards carry from the Ping
