Woke up and watched a bit of it; low 1st serve average, occasional poorly timed double faults and just not as good as Iga at keeping her opponent moving around the court.

Gutsy in the first set but a run of three games where ER only got one point was the crippler there, and then an early break by Iga in the second set sealed her fate.

Iga is world number one with a bonkers point score for a reason, so no shame in at least turning up and putting up a fight.

Miami 1000 Open wild card entry next week and ER looks in better health and condition than most of last year. Good luck ER.

On the bright side: she managed to string together more than two wins in a row.

I'm still rather doubtful she will crack a top 20 ranking again and will probably retire before she turns 25 but we'll see.

She's kept the current coach for over 3 months which is a long time for her and maybe offers some stability.

Insomnia happened to wake me up about 3:30am so started watching the Swiatek game. She held her own for the first few games but then Swiatek's class started to show. Went back to sleep at 5-2 down as I'd decided she wasn't going to turn it around.

I did watched the Maia match who's 13th ranked in the WTA and Emma played well and deserved to win.

She can take some good positives from Indian Wells having beaten a couple of top 20 players and losing to the clear world no.1, all on the back of less than ideal preparation.

If she keeps it up and gets a few injury free tournaments under her belt, it doesn't feel unrealistic that she can be a top 30 player, and maybe crack the top 10 with a couple more years development. She's still a bit raw, but probably better than her ranking in the 70's

What I like about her is her head is right. She’s not afraid of winning and can close out matches when the chance comes. Not something many Brits have had in abundance in the past.

I was surprised to see that Swiatek was tonked 6:2 6:2 in the next match by 10th seed. Who did go on to win the tournament, giving the same treatment to 2nd seed.

Rotten against Andreescu. Won a set but the serve was off as were a lot of other bits. Opponent wasn’t particularly on it either.

Too many errors and missed opportunities....

A bit frustrating to watch!

I was going to say the same thing. Painful to watch. And I'm a fan. So inconsistent, it's like she has not enough confidence in herself.

I don't know how she can get back into the Top 50 this year but hope I am wrong.

She needs to stay fit and play tournaments - and lots of them - to get match time, get some wins, build some confidence and collect ranking points. Only playing big tournaments, and going out in second or third rounds isn’t going to be enough - I think she may need to step down and get some victories.

And mine of the 24th September… she just needs match time, and it doesn’t really matter who against.

Are you guys suggesting challenger tour events? There isn't always a 125 when the "big" tournaments are on either. Not sure there is one this week for instance.

Edit. There is one, on clay in Mexico tbf. That could have been an idea although not sure she is so keen on clay.

Not sure she should play that much yet considering her apparent fragility.

From her and her team’s body language I think she’d done her wrist again in the last set.
I’m just going by what I saw. No more than that.

I noticed too, slightly grimacing and putting the racquet in the left hand occasionally between points.

Not sure playing loads of matches would help.

Thinking about it, and without wanting to stray too far into amateur punditry territory, I wonder if her team have identified a chronic wrist weakness for which the best prevention is a change to the biomechanics of her forehand. Which may take a long time for her to fully embed and win with, even at her level.

I can't see it visually but that doesn't mean the change isn't there, it all happens so fast.

What ranking does she need to be under to qualify for the majors?

Top 104 or slightly worse should do it. The draw is 128 entries including wild cards (x8) and qualifiers (x16).

Must be really difficult to take the time out to really fix and rehab this kind of thing. Probably a good chunk of the season.
