The next round to drop off my last 20 is a 91 with a diff of 17.9. So unless I have a complete horror show next time out, I should be down to 7.something.
I'm sure you are aware of this, but it is your best 8 scores from your last 20 rounds that count towards your handicap. Are you sure the 17.9 is a counting score? If you do have that score to come off your best 9, like you say, you should have another good cut coming

Played in the first round of the club knockout on Saturday morning.
Had to give just the one shot against a guy that had scored 41 points the previous week, so was expecting a tough game.
Ended up beating him 5&3, and was only 6 over the card when we shook hands. A good day in the office!
This week I have a 36 hole comp on Thursday at Puttenham GC, Surrey.
Tough little track, tight and premium on accuracy. Didn't play very well, 27 and 29 points. No doubt another increase in handicap coming.....Had to give just the one shot against a guy that had scored 41 points the previous week, so was expecting a tough game.

Slightly of topic - but this is great. The guy photographed watching Woods play a shot from the rough, without a phone in his hand, is getting his 15minutes of fame… https://outsider.com/sports/golf-fan-earns-own-ad-...
Nearly went and played Girton on Saturday, but saw that they like you to have a handicap of <28 or be able to play at that standard. I would have been probably the last booking of the day, but I chickened out and went to Bar Hill instead. Probably a good job - Girton would have banned me for life, the way I played!
The quest to break 100 goes on - I had 51 over the front nine, including a blow up hole, so that wasn't too bad, but the back nine fell apart completely. Lost balls, shanks, the works.
In all seriousness, I assume clubs want you to play to a certain standard so you don't hold up play. Even when I'm playing terribly, I come in at just over 3hrs because I'm alone, so I don't imagine it's really a problem.
Also, realised I've spent over £90 this month on paying to play, and that's at the cheaper evening rates. Thinking about joining up at the club, which works out at ~ £60/m. Just need to think about whether I will reliably make up for the winter months with the amount I play during the nicer seasons. That's part of the reason I wanted to look elsewhere - I believe Girton is even cheaper, for my age (27).

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Especially if you are the last booking of the day. Most clubs just want you to look after the course, not hold up play and to behave yourself. Just book yourself on the last time of the day and enjoy yourself.
It’s only £500 membership at your age. Get it done and play as much as you can. The benefit of being a member is you can just go and play without worrying that you need to play 18 to get your monies worth.

I'm leaning towards Bar Hill even though it's more expensive, just because I'm familiar with the course, but it's also literally 5 minutes from my house and I work in Bar Hill as well. I'd like to play Girton at some point but I have I think just tomorrow to join Bar Hill before the price jumps (it's cheaper if you pay in advance before the year starts in June)Most clubs just want you to look after the course, not hold up play and to behave yourself. Hate golf.
Last 4 rounds 77, 79, 90, 89.
Try being me then, been playing ok so signed up for a Sat morning medal. Hate medals anyway but this round I decided it was a good idea to try modified swing.Last 4 rounds 77, 79, 90, 89.
So bad I packed up after 9 holes. Back on the course 2 days later, usual swing, all good. Biggest problem seems to be how difficult it is to think your way into hitting the ball properly again in a medal round. Brain went to mush.
Can't wait till tomorrow's game

The 77 was in a club medal. The 79 and 90 club were stablefords the 89 was just a casual knock yesterday. I’d absolutely no idea where the ball was going from one shot to the next. Stupid game

I’d kill for the last two scores Last 4 rounds 77, 79, 90, 89.
It actually got worse after that. ??. No idea where my swing has gone.

Does everyone here always complete their handicap rounds legitimately, i.e. with another player signing their card? Seems to me that it's rather difficult to maintain an accurate handicap if you're someone who likes playing solo. Obviously there is an integrity aspect to maintain, and I understand that, but I'm not sure what an alternative solution could be to prevent sandbagging and cleaning up at tournaments.

How else do you complete a handicap round? Or do you mean you complete your own card and sign as if somebody else was playing with you? I'd suggest that's a good way to get your handicap secretary to be rather upset with you.Besides doesn't everybody enter social rounds directly into the EG app these days? Which means, at the very least, you need somebody else to be complicit.
Personally I only enter my competition rounds for handicap purposes. I prefer to keep my social rounds as being social, which means the odd "I didn't see that" and favourable drops to keep things moving.
Well that's what I was wondering, whether people signed their own cards as "someone else". I don't think that's right at all, FWIW. But only entering competition rounds seems to pose the opposite problem to me - unless you're only playing competitions, it seems to me there is plenty of time to improve without your handicap changing, and you're therefore better placed than many when it comes to the next tournament.
