England cricket 2023 & 2024
Discussion
Not much thinking going on at times from our batsmen.
Commentators and the England management have repeatedly said that the second name on the England Team sheet is Moeen Ali. What am I missing?
(Today he was second alphabetically, but that isn't what they mean before someone picks me up on it!)
His figures are poor. Gets out in the same manner too often, although in his defence he was caught in the deep today rather than the Covers, and I can't remember his last telling contribution. Fun 20s don't cut it.
Bowling, if Livingston is in our squad then Mo is at best our fourth spinner.
Has a nasty habit of dropping catches under pressure.
Who's his natural replacement?

Telegraph reporting that Jofra Archer has had to travel to Belgium during the IPL season for more elbow surgery.
Hate to say it and hope I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised if we haven't seen the best of his Test career, perhaps even the last altogether.

I imagine you're right, all the issues he's having doesn't scream 5 day tests being a good idea.

Don't think he is too happy about the articleHate to say it and hope I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised if we haven't seen the best of his Test career, perhaps even the last altogether.
I wonder as well what is going on with Stokes. He's only played 2 games in the IPL and they are being cagey about what his injuries are.

Root and Stokes are keeping chairs warm in the IPL. Meanwhile Smith and Bus Change are acclimatising to English conditions in the county Championship.
Doesn't exactly bode well for recovering the Ashes, does it?
I wonder why Root and RR bothered with him at the IPL. He hasnt been bought before because he is seen as a test batsman and that hasnt changed. He has only been selected once and didnt get a look in with the bat. Probably would have been better for him to stay at home and get some games in the county champs. Cant blame him for wanting to get some dosh out of the IPL though.Doesn't exactly bode well for recovering the Ashes, does it?
Stokes is a worry, they are being cagey about what his injuries are, two weeks ago they said he wouldn't be fit for a week and there is still no sign of him, I wouldnt be surprised if he doesnt follow closely behind Jofra in coming home. I guess with CSK doing ok without him there is less pressure to put him out there and risk it, there have been a few injuries in the field and to be honest I think I would be happier not seeing him come out now.
On the plus side, Broad, Anderson, asnd Robinson all look to be in good form so even without Archer the pace attack is there, problem will be in the later games if it catches up with the older gents and Archer isnt fit to replace one. Bairstow is back and is looking ok
I read yesterday that Robinson might have overdone it in the last game for Sussex and tweaked a hamstring.
I'm glad that Jof's elbow injury is being taken seriously, Stokes and the ECB have asked for fast wickets to be prepared for the Ashes, so he's clearly uppermost in the minds of Stokes and McCullum, and if he's fit then we can serve up 90+mph from both ends from Jof and Mark Wood for 10-12 over spells, which should occupy the Crim batsmen's minds. Mix that up with Jimmy hooping it around corners in the inevitably overcast and humid conditions, and we might stand a chance.
There's only one way to find out.
