Were the 1st two tests just flukes and honeymoon period? Or is this the England we know, love and deserve?
England are not as bad as the Ashes made out and NZ were completely undercooked, ad them together and you get the first 2 tests. We do have some players who should be nowhere near the team, Crawley 0,0,0,0,0,0,0150, , 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0, 150...or similar, the non spinning spinner and probably Lees too.
I think Malan ought to be a decent Test player, he always seems too sedate in limited overs, although that's probably because he's playing alongside people like Jason Roy and Jos Buttler.
England had no belief in themselves for so long, the Ashes were indicative of that, they were beaten almost as soon as the first ball was bowled (literally in Rory Burns case). There is still a lot of work to do, but a bit of self belief can work wonders.

You can either do Test cricket properly, which is grinding out 70overs at 2.2 runs an over or you can play like you've got somewhere you urgently need to be when Day 4 is scheduled to be.
I can see England coming massively unstuck playing like this somewhere, probably Aus or the subcontinent but its bloody good fun to watch and probably does the popularity of the game no harm whatsoever.

Absolutely love the new approach, it needs a bit of refining ensuring aggressive doesn't get confused with reckless but it's certainly disrupting test cricket.
The days of plodding along are long gone and not sustainable for the sport. I'll happily take a few poor outcomes which will happen but then we've always had that so no risk really.

McCullum seems to be settling in well, it was definitely the right decision to get outside help. They might not be able to roll everyone so easily but England are playing with a different level of conviction. This has to be the way forward.
You don't want to jinx Jamie Overton on test debut but he is so close to a century. Great effort digging in when England really needed runs. If he keeps doing this they might invite the kid along next time. When your coach was a player there will never be a "safe" spot.

Exactly this! There have been far too many times when top and middle order batsmen have defended their wicket for what seems like hours, only to then get out for <50 runs, and I've found myself thinking they could have knocked it around a bit and got out for the same score. At least it would be entertaining! As Bairstow showed yesterday and in the last test one good session can turn the match upside down if one or two batsmen find their feet. The days of plodding along are long gone and not sustainable for the sport. I'll happily take a few poor outcomes which will happen but then we've always had that so no risk really.
