Played Sherfield Oaks yesterday, and I while it was great to get out and play 18, I was found myself getting more annoyed as the round got on.

One course was close so they squeezed all groups into the other course so this meant every group was a 4 ball.

The two groups in front of us had mixed abilities, but they never once attempted to keep up with play, constantly took ages to find their ball, wanted to putt out everything. While I repaired my pitch mark I often repaired another 3.

Another the front 9 we jumped a hole to get in front as it was getting ridiculous. Ended up getting pissed off and let it affect my game.

I have no issues with beginners, as I only play of a 20 handicap, but it's just people didn't seem to be aware they where holding people up.

Got out first thing this morning with a friend. Was great to be first out with a fourball behind so we’re on our own albeit was pretty foggy. Anyway have been struggling to break 90 for quite a long time now; ended up with a 79! 31 putts with one 35 yard chip in. Super pleased with that. Felt like I was actually playing golf, and able to put the ball where I wanted. Surprising for the time of the year and conditions.

Back from Cyprus now. Final round was at Aphrodite Hills. Fantastic place and great weather, helped by the fact that I shot my best round of the week. 91 off the whites which I'm really happy with. Tee-to-green, it was probably one of the best rounds I've ever played. Was just let down by my putting. The marshall did say, after watching me three-putt for bogey from 10 feet, that the pins had been put in pretty hard positions that day.

First time driving a buggy, which was good fun! Bit disconcerting the way it kept chiming at me and making me think I did something wrong, only for it to say "repair pitch marks". The Stelvio Pass-esque route down the valley was superb!

Pic unrelated

Anyway, it's my 30th today. The present from my dad? A stay at the Belfry, with a round on the PGA course, a round on the Brabazon, and a meal. For Monday and Tuesday! Not a long turnaround time then, bearing in mind I'm at his now and need to get clothes washed! I think he might be looking at changing it to Tues/Wed, but if he can't then I'll just be wearing dirty clothes hehe Hopefully the weather plays ball. I daren't look at the forecast!

EDIT: Ok, it's Tuesday and Wednesday now. That makes things a bit easier!

Played this morning and I can't believe how good the course is playing. We've been lucky with the weather so far this Winter..

Sloppy start due to not playing for 4 weeks, but scraped round a -1 gross back 9 (with a double)

Not a massive fan of Sherfield Oaks for the reasons you mention above.

If you don't mind travelling a little futher, check out The Hampshire Golf Club near Andover, irt's high, drains well , good views and green fees are good value :

My home course is a stones throw from Sherfield Oaks (Tylney Park), it's great Sping through to Autumn but doesn't drain well after heavy rain and it's a slog in Winter, so The Hampshire GC is always a decent alternative.

Thanks will take a look. What I didn’t get is that it was boggy in places and they didn’t have any issue with trollies, and no need for winter wheels.

Looks like you had a great time. The courses look fantastic.

Golf back home will be a shock.

Nice day at Princes Monday, shore and dunes.. in no way the poor relation of its neighbours imo, condition was excellent and clubhouse very nice..

A niggle.. nowhere was it obvious what the original layout was when Sarazen won in 32.. I understand 14 of the original greens remain in some form or other, but it isn’t possible to play anything resembling what Sarazen played

The three nines were set out in the 50s but I really think they missed a trick. I think prestwick has the same issue although I haven’t played it. Same piece of land but that’s the only connection to the Open. What a shame.

Fond memories of Princes, I won a works tournament there in the 80's playing off 12.

Played at the Belfry the last couple of days, PGA course on Tuesday and the Brabazon today. The Brabazon was a much better course in my opinion. Both were VERY wet though, particularly the PGA. My course wouldn't be open if it was that wet.

I shot a couple of rounds in the 90s but both could have easily been in the 80s if conditions were better. The greens on the Brabazon looked awful but rolled really true, much better than the PGA which were very inconsistent.

Stayed in the hotel overnight, in one of their suites which was very nice. The bath was much appreciated after a cold day on Tuesday!

It was my new driver's first outing and all I can say is wow! Thoroughly enjoyable to hit, goes a mile and SO straight compared to the old. Liking the stiffer and slightly shorter shaft, it makes the whole club feel much more connected to my swing.

Are you really a golfer if you don’t go for the green on 10?

I've played the Brab 3 times now, and my claim to fame is I've been pin high in the right hand fringe twice now, both times with a 3 wood (tees were forward).

Only time I missed was with Driver....

We don't talk about the tenth... hehe

No, that was the only time I messed up with driver really, topped it short of the water (trying to rip the st out of it)! But made a par nonetheless. I hit another ball for a laugh off the tee and ended up pin high right, between the bunkers. Just to prove to myself I could get there hehe

Erm, sort of but not really. I posted about 2 months ago and having a bad fitting. I went back a couple weeks ago and got it sorted. It's now turned up, and I really like it. Two decent rounds so far but it's promising. PXG Black Ops, 10.5 degrees, Project X Denali 6.0 Blue 50g, Golf Pride MCC grip

Happy New Year all.

My goals are going to be simple and similar to last year...

- play more golf (I played 74 full rounds last year at 31 different courses)

- shoot a level par round (best was +4 last year despite being - 2 after 8)

- speed training, before I started I was at 119/120 swing speed, looking to get to around 125 and hopefully see that 300 carry (current best is 292)

And just keep playing some top courses in the UK and Spain.
You should be hitting 300 at those speeds if you have decent impact conditions and hit the middle of the face, its a waste of effort chasing more club speed.

I've worked hard on Ball speed and can get 170 now with driver, have a watch of Measuredgolf YT channel with a bloke called Fast Eddie. Opening my eyes up a bit to where I focus the forces I need.
