I see that the LPGA have toughened up the rules on pace of play with shots deducted for not hitting the acceptable times per round. What a great move. Nothing annoys me more than slow play, so well done them. Why should a round of golf take 5+ hours. Apparently supported by the players too.
I think what the LPGA actually have announced is that if their new pace of play rules had been enforced this season then double the number of players (up to 20) would have had shot penalties during the season. Which is absolutely nowhere near addressing the issue.

The excellent podcast NLU also highlighted that the LPGA doesn't have comprehensive shot link data from most events to help highlight slow and out of position players. The current slow play rules aren't being enforced on either the PGA or LPGA tours so nothing is going to change, the tours don't care enough about it.

TV audiences are way down, it's getting harder to keep sponsors, when tortoise players like Tom Kim start getting shot penalties I'll believe something is being done.

I think there would have been 23 1 shot penalties and 8 2 shot penalties if the new rules had applied last year. The concept of continuing to review and apply tougher rules to penalise slow play is a step in the right direction and I applaud it. Professional golfers will not want to risk losing money and the message is clear. So let’s see how this season goes when this is implemented at the end of March it won’t be the panacea of course but it continues to move in the right direction. They haven’t moved to naming and shaming yet as they do on the LET.

Being honest - no. Just compare how easy it is over here to get a game of golf at a publicly run course where anyone can play, also the strength of College Golf compared to the unis back home.

I went to uni at the home of golf, and playing for the team almost felt like a token gesture - as in, well it's St Andrews we should probably get a golf team together.

Compare that to even smaller colleges over here like Oklahoma then..yeah well.
It's incredibly easy to play golf in the UK, I can think of many more clubs that welcome anyone compared to private clubs that are members only.

It's just a question of numbers if you ask me - lots more people, and lots more people that play golf! And yes, the weather helps too.

Apparently, since "working" from home has become a thing midweek golf bookings are up 350%!

One of bodhi's original points was course conditions contributing to the quality of the golfers being produced, which I 100% agree with when considering UK golf course. You'll struggle to find many courses in the UK for under £50 a round where the course conditions promote quality golf for more than 6 months a year, and even less so when including public courses...

Certainly agree re university that’s a massive difference

Course conditions mmm not so sure our climate is actually excellent and we get by with far fewer green staff than the average American course.

Green fees aren’t cheap in the major metropolitan areas particularly NY and socal. I’ll report back from Florida in a couple of weeks. The big difference in price is the membership costs, though they are absolutely astronomical in America compared to here for a fully private course

A guy I do some consulting for has just joined Oak Hill Country Club you don't want to know the membership / joining fees. You wouldn't survive the shock.

Let's just say there is an annual fee, a joining fee, a limited number of rounds you can play and a minimum monthly spend in the bar.

The monthly bar spend commitment is about 50% of what I pay for annual golf club membership.

Obviously oak hill is a big name course but anything properly private is I’m told way more than here, well into 5 figures pa

First of all applying my post was a bit blunt, the dangers of posting at 3am after one too many White Russians....why do I always forget how much caffeine is in them? hehe

Anyway I don't disagree it's really easy to get a game on most private courses in the UK, however some courses aren't that welcoming of visitors, whereas munis tend to be a bit more welcoming in my view, and the fate they are closing in the UK they're getting few and far between. My current town has none in the area, and my old town of Dundee will soon have none either after Caird Park closes.

The facilities at them over here are always far more impressive as well, plenty of carts, clubs for hire, driving ranges etc which are rare at munis in the UK ime.

Of course Private Clubs over here are a whole different kettle of fish, however with the number of council run places it almost seems they can afford to be.

^^ I ‘think’ a lot of public courses in the us aren’t owned by the municipality (which might be why they are pretty good in my limited experience)

All the receipts I'm claiming back have "City of Grapevine" on them so that's the case here, however being the US it might be state dependent.

All I'll say is if you want to go to the US and play lots of golf, Texas is a great shout. Loads of courses easy to get on to and the hospitality (and steak) is fantastic.

Played a little there two years ago at Horseshoe west of Austin will defo be back Dallas next time

^^if Dundee has no public courses at all that is shameful. My impression from communicating with the SGU is they couldn’t care less about ‘growing the game’

Quick tip for inveterate ott steep’narrowers (which is most of us )

Tilt your head to the right at address (don’t let your shoulder drop or your weight go back or you’ll be inviting new problems)

It gets your right eye more dominant and a little easier to swing inside, I had a fiddle yesterday and it does seem to help a little

Yeah I've found that before. Makes it easier for me to think about hitting the back of the ball, completely changed how I was thinking about the swing

The into wind holes like the 4th today where hard work to get in 2!!

2 over front 9, 6 over back 9 - Pleased with that, get 6 shots there off the whites which we did decide to play today, god knows why lol

Course was in amazing condition, still get get my head around how fast the greens run in the winter.

It's looking like from April onwards that will be the case. Camperdown closed in 2020 and has been abandoned, and both courses at Caird Park are due to go in a couple of months. There was talk of outside funding coming in but that's been quiet so it's not looking good.

Camperdown I was particularly gutted about as that was a cracking track, and Caird was the first place I played an entire round rather than just hitting the odd shot when walking round Scotscraig with my old man.

Quick trip to the range tonight confirmed my fears. I’m not good enough for a 3 iron. Hoping to replace it with a 7 wood or maybe a 3H. Still undecided.

Swing works paying off. Hitting some nice baby fades. Need to keep the drills going into spring.

I’m committing to getting down to cat 1 this year, currently around a 10. Going to book some Putting lessons in the spring.
