I took up golf at the age of 67 on retirement 4.5 years ago having barely swung a club previously. Of course, I've watched thousand of YouTube videos, some as basic the purpose of the different types of clubs and what that Stableford thing is all about
My handicap is now 23.7. I should have put in more cards late in the summer as my mate, the chairman of the club who persuaded me to take it up, reckons I'm playing under 20 now. Though this is as recent as two months ago when I think I finally found a golf swing mechanic that works for me and I've bought a Chinese copy of a LAB putter that is brilliant and reduced the doubles and triples hugely.
Anyway what I wanted to say was, last Thursday I played with a group of 28 guys in a three club 9-hole challenge (prior to Christmas lunch) and managed to come second with 17 points using a 7W, PW and putter on very soft fairways. My chairman mate was so chuffed he gave me a hug!
So, as soon as the ground firms up through frost or temperature, I'm going to start entering those cards again and get down to at least 18 hopefully before faculties and flexibility make golf even more difficult.

Excellent work, a 7 wood is often a cheat code for players of any handicap and some pros are even using 9 woods. I had the original heavenwood from Callaway about 25 years ago and it was great. So, as soon as the ground firms up through frost or temperature, I'm going to start entering those cards again and get down to at least 18 hopefully before faculties and flexibility make golf even more difficult.
Sounds like you are making good progress but be careful using YouTube as a teaching tool as it is easy to get yourself mixed up with too many thoughts. As you said though, it’s great for understanding rulings and strategies. Keep up the good work!

Which FJs did you get?
I have 2 pairs and they feel very different. The Tour Alphas are very hard and my feet ache after 18 holes if worn in the summer. I only wear them in winter now when the ground is soft.
My Pro SLs are incredibly comfortable and completely different to the TAs. Even in summer my feet ache less than they do wearing the TAs in winter.
I got a pair of Premiere Packards. They weren’t bad by any means but certainly not as easy on the feet as the various spikeless I wear 90% of the time. I have 2 pairs and they feel very different. Happy Christmas PH golfers.
It’s great to see so many of us still playing at this time of year and even breaking scoring barriers.
I played my 100th round of the year earlier this week in glorious conditions, though not as nice as Tycho’s.
Hopefully there will be a couple more rounds in before the end of the year.

Somehow managed to shred this part of my fourth finger at the range yesterday, any theories on what I might be doing to achieve that??

Single overlap (right handed) it’s rubbing on the top of your left index, if it’s not happened before you made more swings, you’ve had a break, changed your grip, it’s too cold etc etc Tycho said:

Played Nevill (Tunbridge Wells) today, course almost to ourselves it s not exactly a hidden gem very solid course reminded me of Stoneham Southampton.
Did play with some joker who claimed an 8 hcap and didn t break 90 off the yellows
How did it play? I’m relatively local (Sevenoaks) and have heard good things. I’m keen for my two lads to start playing, but we’re a long way off sneaking out for 18 on Boxing Day! My eldest is 4 & youngest is 2 months…. Did play with some joker who claimed an 8 hcap and didn t break 90 off the yellows

Realised earlier in the week that the last time I played 18 holes was my matchplay win at the start of October for various reasons. 2 weeks in Cyprus then spending time after that doing the jobs round the house I'd put off for summer, then recovering from the wrist injury I gave myself whilst doing those jobs...
Anyway wrist is better so played in Captain's Birds on Friday then Winter League this morning.
Friday didn't go great, only a 9 hole comp but was very ring rusty so ended up with 12 points, then played an additional 9 holes and didn't do much better on them, ending up with 25. Couldn't keep the face closed on the way through so was hitting everything right, and couldn't putt for toffee - pretty sure I 3 putted from 2 foot at one stage...
Went out again this morning, started in a similar fashion but after scoring a blob on 4 it started coming together again, so from 5 to 14 I was 4 under gross. Fell off a bit after that as we were in a match, we were 1 up but my partner was having a mare so started pushing a bit too hard with some optimistic recovery shots let's say.
Still ended up with 36 points playing off 4 with 2 blobs. Overall pretty happy - we lost them match but took them to the 18th despite one of their team finishing with 43 points...
Wrist has held up well so going to take advantage of the decent forecast and get out a bit more.

First round for me since I got back from South Africa early this month.
Driver going well, didn't miss a fairway and consistently 250-270yds which I'll take given limited run and the temperature this morning.
Irons were ok but not great, scored ok until I picked up the wrong club and hit it without realising, oops. Lost some concentration from there but still beat my friends which is what you want to do at the end of the day!
First comp of the year next weekend, let's see how that goes!
