It's a good course for a fast time, a few from my old club do it regularly. I think the Newport one is a bit more hilly though I've never done it.
Either way, good luck. Are you going for a pb or just to get a 5k in?
Ross, I should've listened to you! Newport was tough, much more like a trail run than a flat race. Went over gravel, mud, grass, bark and sand that had been laid out to cover some of the super muddy sections.Either way, good luck. Are you going for a pb or just to get a 5k in?
Having said that, I still managed to PB with a 21:37 finish in 28th out of 197. I reckon I'd have been nearer to 21:25 at my home Parkrun, so that's the target for next week.
I know this is a 'piece of string' question but any recommendations on shoes? Late 50s, 13st ish with high arches and deformed little toes which sit on top of the fourth toe so play no part in anything much other than to steer me away from narrow shoes (Adidas I find too narrow).
Using Brooks at the moment but not convinced they're right for me, feel I was 'sold into' them somewhat by the running shop in Bath. Noticing some soreness on the outside of my left heel which occasionally causes a small grumble from the left knee.
Aslo, while I'm on, any thoughts on outdoor running vs treadmill? Am doing it all outdoors at the mo but wondering about rejoining the gym.

Just did my first ever 10 miles tonight. Dark, wet, cold, raining, wintery showers and a head torch.
Never thought I'd be saying that on a Friday night 11 months ago at the age of 41.
I can't imagine running that far. I couldn't run 10 yards in Feb when I started and I now run cross country all weathers at least 4 days a week.Never thought I'd be saying that on a Friday night 11 months ago at the age of 41.
Well done Ewen.
GSR tomorrow now. Be interesting to see how it pans out. I'm aiming for circa 5:50-5:55/mile to build a bit of a "lead" before the last 2 miles which are renowned for being windy to try for sub 60.
Whether that plan comes to fruition is another totally different thing!

Well done to everyone who has raced so far/good luck to those racing today.
I seem (touch wood) to be recovering well from my op, so will give it another week and try a swim a week on Monday and then a run the following day (hill session!). Going to see if I can use the exercise bike in the gym at work when I go back next week.
Won't make the first race in the Oxford Mail league next weekend but should be ok for the one in December. I'll have three weeks to get in some sort of shape for a 10k at the end of November, it was the race I was targeting for a first sub 40, but that might have to wait until a 10k in February which I hear is flat as a pancake!
Frustrating not being able to run though, miss it more than I thought I would and my back still aches from the fell race two weeks ago!

If you Google outside heel pain you get a multitude of potential problems, maybe have a sift through and see what sounds right, it could be unrelated to the shoes.
No running for me at the moment
Diagnosis: Manflu (I've slept for 25 hrs total the past 2 nights)
I'm hoping that a week is the maximum I'll have to take off (Last ran on Weds)

Best of luck for today, Ross. Hope you get what you're hoping for at the Great South.
Thanks mate. Did it in 59:05 so just under 5:51/mile average. Went off conservatively and felt strong at the end and if I'd have known sub 59 was on the cards I'd have pushed harder! On the whole I shouldn't moan, I got sub 60 for 10 miles which was what I was after.
I don't consider myself quick but was around 70th out of 25k people is pretty funny

Looking at my shoes they are Brooks Ravenna 3
http://www.royles.biz/product/9521/Brooks_Ravenna_...
I can't remember what I paid for them but it was a lot more than I see they're going for on tintaweb. Something in the order of £80.
you guys will laugh at this, and quite frankly i'm amazed..... i ran RIDICULOUSLY consistently!!!!!
5km splits online were:
1st 5k in 18:19
10k in 36:41 (so 5-10k 5k split in 18:22)
15k in 55:03 (so 10-15k 5k split in 18:22)
still feel like i should have run under 59 but shouldn't be disappointed.....good, solid performance official position was 71st i think

That's like the top 0.28% off the race! I could possibly manage 8 miles in that time.

Just run my first marathon 4:27 it was raining all the way round.
Would of liked a bit quicker but considering i had not even run a half marathon before start of year i should be pleased.
I have a place for London next year so hopefully can improve on that.

I managed a 1:28:48 today and couldn't have gone any faster. Averaged about 8.30/mile which is at least 30 sec less than I'd done even on my fastest training runs so I'm over the moon.

well done yourself. that's a big improvement! my min/mile was wrong, quite how i worked that out i don't know, it works out at around 5:54/mile. i didn't like the wind in the last 2 miles, had to up the effort to sustain my pace.

have you got any races coming up? i've got another XC race in a fortnight then a flat HM in 4 weeks. Based on the 10M time, what you reckon I should aim for in the half? i was thinking sub 1:19?
