Just seen some EU nutter talking about breaking up Google because when you search the Google website for stuff to buy they try to sell you stuff that they are financially connected to.

Thing is, if I search for stuff to buy on eBay or on Amazon or anyone else's website, they only show me things they have a financial interest in selling me too. That's just the way these things work.

So why are the EU trying to fk about with something that works very well for us consumers? Are they just after a few billion quid to give to Greece, or is there more to it than that?

Part of me would just love to see the superannuated f'ckwits of the EU take on google; they'd lose.

Why would any company suggest you go to a competitor over them? If people aren't happy with the search results that Google provide then they can use Bing or Yahoo or one of the many other free to use search engines on the market.

^^^ Basically, yes. That is what 'socialism' means in practice - if you have any money, reasons will be found to take it from you.

Most politicians and media commentators are not able to distinguish between Google and "The Internet".

Quite what the EU expect from a private company with products to sell, I can't imagine. When the EU can get a firm of accountants to sign off their books, they can start lecturing others on how to run their affairs

A quick search reveals this:

Seems to be about anti-trust.

If Google weren't providing a good service as judged by its customers then the free market would ensure that they lose market share.

It's just the latest EU shakedown of a US tech company. Everyone knows that if they were a French company, this would not be happening.

Google will just suck it up and accept it's the cost of doing business over here.

Its nothing to do with a shakedown - its the EU rightfully cracking down on an abusive monopoly.

Its pretty obvious that some of the replies above have zero understanding whats going on, I'm not going to spend hours working for free trying to educate you guys so all I'm gonna say is you're wrong and I would suggest you go do some reading on it if you care enough.

Google being slapped down and the emergence of a real viable alternative would be a brilliant thing to happen, even if the general public are too stupid to understand that.

This is the correct answer.

There were viable alternatives, they just jumped the wrong way. How better to judge viability than success? Even a well-funded company like Microsoft cannot do it better than Google - just look at Bing, for goodness sake.

I am of the opinion that the internet is a fun place, but that users should have an advanced degree in cynicism before venturing forth.

Regardless of right or wrong, how would any fine be enforced? Who gives the EU the right to start demanding fines from companies? If Google stuck two fingers up at the EU, how could they stop Google from operating their online business - block punters being able to access their sites? Ban Android phones etc..?

There would be loads of legal avenues to enforce the fine, that aspect of it is a non issue.

really?

how can they ban Android?

WTO and the US would take a pretty dim view if they tried
