I missed any previous discussion on this, so could you clarify the colour of the smoke, is it blue, white or black? Thick clouds or more like steam?

I wonder if it's worn injectors or something like that?

Afraid I need more info to help diagnose. What age and mileage has your car done? E90/91 or E46 or F something?

Possibly not if the smoke only happens when he takes his foot off the accelerator.

OP more info needed. Colour of smoke, age and mileage of car, etc.

Likewise I think we need more info about the engine but I take it from the 330d description that it's a diesel. It could be regenerating the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)

It only happens on a long journey and can be stopped by easing off the throttle which will cut the fuel and reduce the temperature of the exhaust. I don't understand why it happens on every long journey.

I'd be renewing the crankcase breather before anything else, and flushing the oil

Vortex filters can make these early M57s smoke more. The best filter is a standard BMW loo roll type. Is the air filter new? You can check injector leak off too. Glow plug faults won't cause any extra smoke. Excess smoke (grey/black) on these can also be caused by holes in intake/turbo pipes and also by soft pipes and a leaking intercooler.
An air mass test is also a good diagnostic aid, this compares actual air mass against desired at various set points. Grey, oily smoke can also be a sign of turbo failure.
