Bearing in mind the waiting list for a Cayman - what do you think the deprecation will be like over the 1st year ?

It's all down to demand and supply, obviously.

Supply is low due to recent factory reorganisations and possibly restricted a bit for us UKers due to the weak pound against the Euro reducing profit per UK car. This is not helping the waiting lists.

Demand? There seems to be enough to keep the small number of build slots full. I think those people wanting new cars are out there and buying.

No idea what used 718 demand is at the moment given that most cars are almost new. Maybe watch the OPC list for a bit and see how quick the turnover is.

Bottom line - it's real finger in the air guesswork IMHO. Supply of new cars may increase in the future and reduce the current demand for used cars due to long waiting lists (for example).

At the moment OPC dealers seem to be asking list prices for low mileage 718s, presumably reflecting longish delivery times, but as Twinfan says, in a year's time that may be very different as production increases.

If a decent wait continues prices will remain strong

If the wait time reduces so will prices of used cars

Wait time is reducing at a fair pace. Mine was 10 months, but I reckon I could get another new one in less than 6. I don't suppose they'll do massively worse than 981 Caymans over the first few years, but I can't see any big reason they'll do much better. Planning to keep mine for a few years - really enjoying it - but will be interesting to see what it costs me in depreciation. I'm guessing £20k over 3 years at worst if I look after it. Hoping for a little better, but sometimes you have to live with jumping in with both feet. 1 year depreciation is too much of a lottery for me. Unlikely to be good.

thanks for the comments - i'm in 2 minds as to what to do, I hardly use it and have to actually find some reason to...mind you my wife would quite like it, and it is a fantastic car .

I did quite fancy going back to something more simple / classic and was pondering buying an old MGA convertible, ...and now alighted on a Morgan , its something about those running boards...lol

Is this definitely the case? My OPC said wait still at 12 months and mine hasn't been brought forward at all despite suggestions it would. November order end of August delivery

Might depend on the OPC and their allocation, I ordered in March and my CS is due middle of August. I was told I could've had a Boxster by May/June.

I can only imagine the moderators thought I was trying to sell my car - which I'm not , but hey ho what can you expect nowadays.

When i picked up my Cayman quite recently, the sales exec said in a round about way, "if you find it isn't for you, I think you'll still do quite well out of it. Just give me a call."

Didn't quite register at the time because of the excitement of picking up a new car but on reflection he was definitely suggesting he would have no issue moving my car on again if I wanted rid with minimal financial loss.

Like someone else has said 20k over 3 years won't be far off.

If depreciation is a big factor standard 718 with few options wouldn't be a bad place to go

I think it depends which side of the December 2016 to Feb 2017 "hiatus" your order fell, and how much allocation your OPC has managed to sell. I collected mine on May 12th, and enquired of the OPC about flipping the new one for another new one this year. He reckoned he probably had sufficient allocation to get me another car before the year was out. I was considering that there was the possibility of very low depreciation in the first 6 months, but I have chosen such a weird pov spec I decided not to take the gamble.

Wouldn't be surprised if yours turns up a little early, but doubt it would be by much. 10 month wait seems pretty standard for those that ordered last year.

I think they will hold very well indeed.

Of course if you spec it way up there then you will lose more, but a sensible spec will hold it's money very well indeed.

For instance, I bought my 718 PDK S with 5k miles at £9000 off list but it does have a crazy high spec. Sounds like I got a deal eh?Not really, even at the price I paid It still cost me £7000 more than a standard S PDK.

I would love to see a price comparison between 2014 981 s & 2016 718 s, say both similar spec and miles (10k?). Would be quite interesting to see how much they would worth. read

If you look on the Porsche approved site you'd get a fair idea. Looks like the 718S would be worth 10k or a bit more than the 981S at the moment, but I'd expect that to close as 718 production ramps up.
