Am thinking of getting one of these as my next car not stupidly fast but fast enough compared to what ive owned. I want to know if they suffer any issues etc or are they reliable. Ive seen some decent looking ones for 5_7k. I prefer the look of them and need a hatchback for its practucal side as opposed to saloon. Thoughts,?

I'm not a Subaru guy but my friend is. He has always stuck to the 2.0l cars and says that the 2.5l in comparison can be unreliable.

All I know is that £520 per year road tax for a 220hp car is A LOT so, if you're going to do it you may as well plump for a WRX STI. The interior is always cheap on the Subaru's, so I don't think you'd feel bad in an older one. Why not find yourself an older classic, Bug or Blob WRX for less money, a more reliable engine, less running costs but with the same power. That'd be my choice.

There are a few bug or blob wagons that would suit you.

Just a quick search on the Web brings up loads of forums going into issues about the 2.5. That is just the internet thiugh, in reality they're probably ok.

It was mostly the hacthback 2.5 STI's that suffered from ringland failure, plenty of info online about them as mentioned. WRX's in their standard tuned state seem to be fine. I had a 2.5 WRX saloon for a while, but have now gone back to a 2.0 blobeye saloon with PPP. The 2.0 is mopre "revvy" than the 2.5 and feels less torquey but they are more reliable I think, but it really goes on how the car has been treated over it's life.
Make sure it has FSH and the correct cambelt changes.

A 2.0 blob wagon would be perfect, get one with PPP and you've got 265bhp on tap plenty of torque and the versatility of an estate. Check the PH buying guide in the Subaru sub forum for guidance. If you're lucky you might find an "SL" version which had heated leather seats and a sunroof, but they tend to command slightly more money (not much though).

If your budget would stretch a little the limited edition WRX-S gets you the PPP fitted (so up to around 265BHP), Prodrive alloys and some STi bits.

We loved ours - we'd a 2010 black one from new.

Might be worth considering the blobeye WRX estate? If you need a hatch for practicality reasons. The 2.5 engines in the hatch are notorious for being weak

Mostly - it seems - in the STi (hatchback) variant? That was my understanding anyway

"There's a long thread on scoobynet about it, having read through it after I got my WRX I'd thought I'd made a big mistake, however, it does most certainly seem to be STi models getting the problems."

Read up on them - i don't believe it impacts the non sti variants.

How about a Legacy GT SpecB (the twinscroll turbo one)?

Super practical, reliable, and 280bhp!

Good ones are available well within budget!

They are all Jap imports so the milage on them is often a mixture of miles and kilometres, they seem to go on forever if they are looked after though!

for 7k you should be able to get a very tidy fresh import!

For example:

This company have a vey good rep on the Legacy forums!

Also as I wouldnt know what people have done with them in past if any of the old or new subarus were run on low octane fuels would this damage the engine etc long term or would I prpbably be alright as you cant tell what its been running on.

Im still leaning towards the newer hatches its just more appealing to me. Im not sure if the wrx is affected some people say it is some say its not? How much should i keep asside for engine failurw if i do buy one. If its had full service history and not modified im hoping it will be ok. Seems to be modded ones that blow or when people bounce it off the rev limiter. Theyre alreadt made to run on edge. I will maybe get one with full history and keep my fingers crossed I wont blow it up.

Just seems like a major concern as it eould probably cost half the cars worth to fix

Standard 2.5 WRX is fine, not affected like the STI was. Still folk running around with standard 2.5 STI's that have done big miles too.

People on scoob forums reckon the wrx can go but head gaskets more common. Tbh im sure its probably driving it into the ground or modding it more. Ill see how I feel in a couplle of months when i get the money aside for one. Im sure it will be ok. Maybe just put a couple of hundred a side a month for issues.

Couple reckon ringlands go on wrx. Although if it was that common they wouldnt still be selling like mad. Any sings or things to look out for when going to look at and test drive one.
