evening all.

looking to buy an e70 to shuttle myself the wife and 3 kids around. the prices of the x5 seem to of dropped. i'm after the 7 seat variant. it will be doing the odd trip to ireland to see family.

got a budget of around £10k. so gonna be looking at the high milage options. around the 2007-2008 age seems to be within my budget.

is there enough room to be able to slide the middle row of seats forward whilst still having a forward facing connected? or with isofix seat attached

looking round, the amount i'd have to pay on road tax varies from £300 odd to £500. this leaves me a bit confused... i could understand if it were cheaper for later models, but the variance seems to come from cars of similar age and engine size.

any watch outs for the cars? should I consider any other car for similar price? always liked the e60 touring in m sport... but not sure if i could fit 3 kids (12 year old, 2 year old in a forward facing seat and 6 month in rear facing).

how many is too many miles for the diesels?

Interested in this thread, as a 7-seat X5 is on my horizon too.

Criticisms seem to be disappointing fuel economy, never reaching anywhere near the official figures, an unsettled ride and high maintenance costs.

If you're looking at leggy examples then a full service history is very desirable as these can throw up big bills.

As you've noted, there's also the sting of higher VED with some examples, up to £520 a year - ouch!

Premium 7-seaters aren't exactly thick on the ground and all of the alternatives will be wallet bashers too.

Yeah. Daft as it sounds. I'm not fussed on Mpg. My work commute is 3 miles at the moment. Then we will have the odd trip to family in Manchester and Ireland.

I do like the XC90. The Q7 seems dearer than similar aged BMW.

I was looking at the zafira well Mrs was.... But I'm not sold on them. At all. Haha

Same boat as you guys, looking for a 7 seater but not keen on MPV, Wife doffo isn't, with a 3rd on the way and 2 under 5's I need to fit 3 seats / boosters in.

Family member has an X5 and his insurance tripled from a Kia Sorrento when he got the X5, he is 56 so no young kid, he was quite shocked so worth looking at.

Ford Edge seems to be big across the back seats but no 3rd Row, Discovery Sport is hugely expensive and X3 is not big enough.

Wild card for me is a 5 series GT or 3 Series GT apparently they are quite big in the back and can fit 3 across if put in right, i'm hoping to look at one later this week.

I have a 62 plate X5 3.0 M Sport. Ride is firm, but I like that and the performance is fantastic. Over 45,000 miles I have consistently averaged 28-30mpg.

Tyres are expensive £220 for fronts, £280 rears and a set does around 22-23,000 miles.

Maintenance hasn't cost too much yet, but as it gets older I expect the bills will mount. I decided not to renew the BMW warranty as I feel that they inflate repair prices to make the warranties look good value.

I think its a reliable, great looking and performing car.

I'm quite used to firm rides. Had a 04 z4 on run flats for a while. Don't mind that ride all that much. I won't be doing many miles a year id imagine in it. But need that extra row.

I'm.

I run a used car business and made the decision to stop selling these recently. Particularly higher mileage 08/09 vehicles.

When running right they are brilliant but they are very expensive to maintain with large costs for parts. Electronic handbrake units, suspension problems plus lots of other issues. I think for me a lot of the customers were proving to be quite hard work with unrealistic expectations of a used vehicle more so than I have found on any other type of car sold which may well have left a sour taste.

I would not be ruling them out but I would have a healthy maintenance fund put to one side as you will need it.

Having a bork fund is going to be essential with any high-mileage secondhand luxury SUV, whichever badge it wears.

Talking of bork fund, I had a quick look on Autotrader for L322 Rangies for £10k, but they all seem to be older, with higher miles than £10k X5s.

I have looked at them. Saw the 2+2+2 variant. Very different. A lot of car too. Not a very common car either.

Yea you can get the 7 seater or the 6 like you said. real GT car will eat a lot of miles, I was given one for the weekend some years back as was going to buy one brand new then I saw the depreciation so steered clear, looking again now I may just get one for the that price and what you get...!!!

The only problem with the R-Class is that it's ugly as sin.

Especially when put up against the lantern-jawed E70 X5.

I like a bargain as much as the next man, but I'm not sure I could live with an ugly car, no matter how cheap it was.

SIDE NOTE: Which is why I've owned a number of Mk3 Granadas (including Scorpios), but never the "ugly Scorpio" that replaced the Granada. Just couldn't bring myself to do it! laugh

What are people's thoughts on the q7 as an alternative, air suspension, reliable 3 or 4.2 lite engine. Need to go sit in both at car giant I think to have a quick comparison

I'm just looking at ditching my 10yr old galaxy as I'm just sick of looking at the gopping fking thing, despite it being a very, very practical motor.

I also have 3 kids but at 3, 5 and 7 we've only got one wacking great car seat to squeeze in.

Thought about the Volvo XC90 but the engine seems weedy and Volvo parts are expensive and frequently needed .

Thought about a newer Smax or galaxy but no way am I spending 15k+ to sit in the same cockpit.

Audi is high on the list but only the 3.0 quattro as it's a proper size engine and seems to be bullet proof unlike the larger capacity version. Going to look at an A6 Avant to see if the family can fit. If not then I'd consider a Q7.

Other contender is a merc E class 350cdi with the 7 seat option. They also appear to be very reliable.

I've had a few BMW's including an e61 and they don't half like to throw up niggly problems so I'm steering clear this time

Personally prefer the Q7 - bought my 2nd one at xmas after test driving the usual suspects and having my heart set on an X5. Much more comfortable and better spec and thats coming from a BMW fan!

They are very spec and colour sensitive though. Some look great and other look like a turd before it has been polished.

How are the higher miles q7's. Looking at them, they are a lot more expensive than the x5 whilst having more miles.

Is the x5 and q7 all wheel drive?

Do they still do the e class in 7 seats? I thought it was the early 2000s model that had that option

Sounds like there are plenty of high mileage q7 out there with no issue.

What are the best colour / spec combo, guessing reverse camera, pano roof are nice to have?

All X5s are 4wd.

I'd be interested to know what you chaps end up getting and how it pans out as I'm also looking at the same sort of stuff.

List so far, in order of preference:-

1. Merc E350 CDI (with 7 seat option)
2. Audi A6 3.0tdi quattro (no 7 seat option but might squeeze em in)
3. Audi Q7
4. BMW X5 (@with 7 seat option)
5. Volvo XC90

I really don't want an SUV, I'd rather have an estate, hence the merc is top of my list at the moment. I also don't want an MPV,/people carrier. I want something that drives nicely. The main hurdle is finding the right car, with the right spec, with the right cost to change.

I don't know why car manufacturers can't offer versions with 3 proper seats in the middle row. There must be many thousands of 3 kid family's that are restricted to what they can get based on the usually compromised middle seat. An no, don't link to one of those multimac bags of ste....I don't like them smile
