Winnatts was actually voted as the best climb in the UK here

I've done it 3 times, it's a tough one, I think it's harder than the rating in the book suggests and obviously the scenery is excellent!

There is a second way to climb to the top of the same peak (from Edale) which is also great
Mam Nick - I'm new to road cycling and failed at Winnats. Will try Mam Nick soon.
Mam Nick doesn't get as steep so I'd say it's a little easier

Hi all - I might be up in Berverley, east Yorks soon. Are there any good routes in the area, say 100km riding? Or maybe an hour's drive away?

We did this a couple of years ago. 130km but a cracking route. I've got the gpx file if you need.

From Beverly up over the worlds then you can do either Boltby or Whitehorse bank (Ignore sutton bank - it's the easier of the three and way to many impatient drivers) and then back. Both in the 100 climbs IIRC.

If you're happy to drive, you could park below Sutton bank, tick off one of the two mentioned, then head north and ride west to east to essentially tick off all the dales and as the ridges typically run North / South you'll tackle some great climbs. If you're feeling fit, give Chimney Bank and the others around it a go yikes

Beverley and surrounding is pretty flat, if you head over to Pocklington or Malton, its a little lumpier. Generally v quiet roads although try and stay away from the main A roads if poss. There's a few short sharp climbs (max up into the 20'odd %) when you get over near Pocklington (Hanging Grimston, Thrussendale, Acklam, Birdsall, Leavening Bank)

Maybe head towards Market weighton via South Dalton and Kiplingcoates => Market Weighton => Londesbrough => Pocklington => Bishop Wilton => Thixendale => Fimber => Wetwang => Tibthorpe=> Bainton =>Lund=> South Dalton=> Etton=> Beverley

As above, if you're prepared to drive, you will find far more challenging routes in North Yorkshire. The Dales is more than an hour from Beverley so the NY Moors are your best bet ... .maybe drive to Malton or Pickering and use that as a starting point.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

We have in laws at the top of Sutton Bank, so I have ridden that one a couple of years ago, just before the Tour de Yorkshire. We literally had to pull over half way up to let the caravan by, although it was a pale imitation of the TdF caravan. I didn't know it at the time, but my crank was coming apart, which I found out properly the next day on the way to Rosedale Chimneyeek Got to the Lion Pub and decided I couldn't risk the climb of the Chimney, so rolled back down to the Pickering Road which was easy enough, and then pedalled back very gingerly...

I had a look on Strava and have found two of the 100 Yorkshire climbs near Pocklington, Nunbourne Holme and Hanging Grimston, and it's about a 90 km loop, so will probably try that.

Hanging Grimston is a bit of a challenge as some of the surface is loose with a gate halfway, which is generally closed, so you need to open and close behind you, just so your aware. I live in Pocklington so local roads to me, although I've not been up Hanging Grimston for a while ...

2 gates sometimes. But the other climbs up to the top of of the Roman road are worth considering: painsthorpe and uncleby. A touch further along is Creets hill, recently resurfaced and good up & down

If you go up nunburnholme then head to warter then huggate then thixendale then acklam then down creets then loop back through bugthorpe towards Kirby underdale you can pick hanging grimston or one of the others back up to the top and make a nice ride

Made it round this morning, 71 km. Went up Nunburnholme and then headed back to Beverly - the Mrs wasn't keen on me wandering around all day, and to be honest, the weather wasn't great. There was a lovely road somewhere around Warter, but the farmers had been bringing the taters in, christ what a mess!

There's always a bit of an adventure about riding somewhere you don't know. My Giant gps is ok, but it isn't sat nav, and if you study maps you get a collection of place names in your head but you don't really know how they relate to each other.

Nice work. I always find it hard to stay motivated to do tough climbs this late in the year and end up doing a lot of easier local stuff

How did you find it?

Looks good. There are hundreds of miles of this sort of road in North Yorkshire.

Extra points for grass up the middle. Then it qualifies as a Yorkshire Motorway.

It was good, gutted I didn't get to the Hanging thingy climb, but I've learnt the hard way about upsetting the Mrs...I really really hate when Yorkshire folk bang on about Yorkshire, it's just another county amongst many other beautiful ones, but there really was something about the wide open views today.

Somehow, I would have been more comfortable in N Yorks. I know it's more remote and more extreme, but I think there are fewer towns so fewer roads so for me I think I could have planned a 3 hour route and kept on it easier.
Had a good week on the bike, saw 2 days of the Giro at the start and finished with some of the East Riding cool

Roads are shocking at the moment with all the farming activity and weather. I didnt Nunburnholme this morning on the way to Beverley - may have passed you at some point!

In case anyone is planning to do Streatley Hill - it's closed next Sunday, 25th (hopefully for resurfacing as it's completely shagged at the top but seems an odd day to pick).

Needs to include some off road climbs in it - there's bound to be plenty.

Streatley is closed next Sunday because the CTT National Hillclimb is being held on it, organised by my club... Unfortunately no spectators are allowed because Covid.

Ah, that explains it. I thought it was an odd day for roadworks! Have a good one.
