That looks like a rather nice way to spend an afternoon. Is the trail well signposted?
Pretty much. It's an old railway line running from Guildford to Shoreham. I suggested it was a bit of a dull ride & took a bit of flak (fairly as it goes) for that. It's actually a pretty pleasant afternoon's riding but really quite flat. Depends what you like, but there are worse routes.Eddie Strohacker said:

The idea of pottering down to the coast for a bag of chips and a drink (and some cake), and then heading back in a day with decent company and in the sunshine sounds quite a nice change of pace to me! Steyning village is the last sizeable village on the route, but it carries on another couple of miles to Shoreham, you can route easily into the airport, or head into Shoreham itself which is full of bars & restaurants.

As you know Eddie I cycle this route with my rug rats and its a really good day out with some good pubs along the route
i recently also took my 7 year old to the Cuckoo Trail which is the same but tarmac and it makes 20 miles an easier ride for him

I live in Steyning so know the Downslink well. I also say it is dull - large chunks of it you are in cuttings so you can only see ahead of you. It's an easy way to get a lot of off road miles in, most of it is almost doable on a road bike so you don't need a high spec full suss mtb. But you can get on the South Downs Way just after Steyning and that can be as hard as you like. Also in Shoreham you could go to Brighton or Worthing on a pan-flat route with hardly any road bit.
From the last couple of rides...
Gravel bike is out of action, front wheel being relaced, so have wheeled out the old XTC for some slick-shod, fully-rigid, slightly damp, off-road entertainment...
Early blast this morning - view of Sydney from North Head... Honest!
End of ride on the Yeti on the previous weekend...

Holmbury Hill on the shopping bike. I really can't wait to get a bike with knobbly tyres and suspension.
Seriously jealous. I have many many happy memories (and one sad incredible painful one with a stay in Guildford hospital) from there. Sad what's been proposed with the land round there. Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
