Bit of an emotional journey this weekend. This is Dartmoor, on the road from Postbridge to Bovey Tracey. Three years ago, on the Dartmoor Classic, I was going well, the climbing was done and I came over the crest of the hill, to see this stunning downhill corner with a zoom climb out of it. I accelerated hard down the hill, checked in front and behind to see there was just me on the road, swooped all the way to the right, and turned in. Missed the apex by about a metre, zoomed way over to the right, hit the grass, got back on the road on the bike and then something went wrong, crash. No bones broken but gouged a chunk out of my knee, and stem.

I've walked those paths regularly as I have a house in Carvoeiro and spend around 100 days there each year. My cycling is always on road though.
I live in Porches, so not far away. I still ride road occasionally too but got the MTB bug earlier this year and quite like not having to worry about bad drivers!

Most of my MTB route is away from the coast, towards and around Silves and the foot-hills of Monchique.

No prizes for guessing what happened here...

Lots of speed, not much grip, fallen tree... I got clotheslined good! No real damage done though.

Wasn't going to fit under that at speed.

Enjoyable saturday morning ride even if a few bits of track were a mudbath, upped the pressure in my fork and shock this week and its feeling much more lively (and didn't bottom out this time).

Ouch! Good all is ok.

I hit my head on a smaller branch today, knocked my glasses off but no damage. Slower too as I was cresting a steep hill, do the same bit 5x a week, first time it has happened - never consciously realised I must've been ducking previously! laugh
Easily done it seems! Those delinquent trees attacking people...

Instead of trying to duck and hitting my head I stayed upright and hit with the arm and chest, took a hand off the bar at the last moment to grab the branch and soak up some impact. Ended up sitting on the trail laughing at myself while my bike made it a metre or two past the tree before stopping. hehe

Found the limits to my ability and enjoyment of the new bike today...

The trail continues in a similar vein behind the camera and gets a bit narrower too. Need more practice, and possibly larger cajones

Got a free pass to go for a ride this morning while the OH was off cycling round arsenal stadium with her brother.

Lovely view from the top of Dunstable downs made even better by the horrible climb from the north having been resurfaced

Couple of days ago. View back over Annecy.
After an aborted circumnavigation of the lake (8 year old who hadn’t ridden his bike for a year, quit after 25km). That left me free for a quick spin up the Col de Leschaux. A reasonable easy climb compared to the other stuff out here!

Did Free Cycle with my boy today in London. Too busy to really call it a good ride, but loved being with the boy. It's his second year doing it, was rocking last year's tabard!

Monday night spin down the River Dee.... slightly marred by two instances of cars pulling out (from my right) without looking properly....

The first missed me by a few feet and “woke up” when I shouted a warning....then, I suspect as he was slightly embarrassed, he hung back and wouldn’t overtake despite there being room to do so.

Took my very old mountain bike out this evening, did some ‘proper’ mountain biking in the woods, first time for about 15 years

A panorama from yesterday, as usual with a photo you don't really get the gradients all around. Shoreham is on the coast to the left, Worthing to the right. Slightly closer, to the left, is the descent down Steyning Bostal and home.

I am LITERALLY half way between Madonna del Ghisallo and Muro di Sormano, 15 k either direction, but looking at the weather, I'm leaving the bike in the bags in the car till morning...
