Best ride out in months. The freezing weather has turned gloopy clay into hard pack. Utter joy... Roll on spring.
My local trails suffer in the wet and are hugely popular. Lockdown is great because it's seen a huge drop in riders to give the trails a chance to recover a bit. The ruts centre and left are almost hub deep.
Its hard work too, wet, soggy clay or loam. Literally no grip and soul sucking wet ground. May just stay clear until Spring

Yeah - I wasn’t sure what I was going to find today and have been caught out there before.Nearly went that way yesterday but went to Wells for a takeaway coffee instead ! It's a busy road for cyclists though for sure, but also for fast drivers.....

Can one of you please put me out of my misery - I know that road and that view - used to work in Bridgwater and Taunton and traverse the Levels a lot - but I cannot place it. It has been about 20 years though...It's the road from Godney to Glasto.........

It's a bit hit and miss with water, especially after the last few days ! I've waded through it before almost up to the BB

I thought about Wells, but was definitely in the mood for a flat one. Also told myself that all Somerset-based cyclists have a duty to visit Sweets at least once a month...Nearly went that way yesterday but went to Wells for a takeaway coffee instead ! <sigh>. Dry weather and sunshine.
A bit hazy today, nice out though. Expecting 20C next week and bright sunshine, looking forward to that. Looking forward to the Algarve filling up with tourists too! Much happier place when everyone around is on holiday. Bathroom_Security said:
Im hating Surrey Hills at the minute, occasionally theres evidence someone has been and cleared up braking ruts or improved drainage but theres been next to no maintenance all year and so many riders the place is just trashed. Many 'hidden' trails have cropped up like a cancer on the side of pitch hill too.
Its hard work too, wet, soggy clay or loam. Literally no grip and soul sucking wet ground. May just stay clear until Spring
Never ridden there, but it looks quite sandy on vids I've seen - so better drained. Obviously not. Its hard work too, wet, soggy clay or loam. Literally no grip and soul sucking wet ground. May just stay clear until Spring
It just sucks when the ride time ~ = cleaning time.

I went up Holmbury hill yesterday and it was fine, the wettest part was the bridleways back to my house.

I used to have an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the roads across Somerset - partly related to my job at the time, but mostly anything to avoid the traffic on the A39 and other main roads, esp in the summer when the place gets overrun by camper vans and the like.
Kinda miss it sometimes. But not all the time!

I'm just off the A39 half way between the M5 and Glasto, it's a busy road for sure, but I'm on the levels so miles of very quiet flat country roads, nestled between the Mendips and Quantocks, my perfect cycling country !
