Hey chaps,

Planning buying one this weekend I think.
http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-520-s-full-su...

I've read a few reviews and they seem ok.

I understand I could get a 2nd hand better bike but I would prefer a new one.

Just curious if anyone else has owned one or read any different reviews.

The local bike shop said it's a very good entry level full sus for the price and easily upgraded when the time comes.

Why full sus?

It is good value for money as the spec is as about as good as it gets at that price point but unless you're in to downhill I suspect you'll find the performance compromised.

Personally I'd punt £500 at this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111519496321?_trksid=p20...

The pictures are crap but I'd go second-hand. BTW, no connection with the seller; I just happen to have one!

a carbon mtb is overkill for a beginner if that is what the op is.

op what level of fitness are you? are you looking at single track red routes?

The full sus is at the lower end therefore components will wear/break easier/quicker. A full sus allows you to travel faster over bumpy bits, but you need experience and fitness to push it. a 29er is more wieldy but a good compromise and cheaper as not in favor but are good to ride.

Agreed but if you're spending £500 why not?

I don't understand 'the not in favour' comment. Most manufacturers have moved away from 26" and now focus on 29'er's and 650B's. I recently tested both and my favourite was a Cotic Soul 650B but I just could not justify spending £2k when I could get the Giant for under a £1k.....still might buy the Cotic in the new year though wink

Anyway, my main point was that your money is better spent on a well spec'd second-hand bike until you know what you really need.

Nah its not a carbon bike buddy.

As for level of fitness I would say I have a high level of fitness, boxing 5 nights a week and doing around 15 miles on the bike at the weekends.

Trails - Nevis Range/Laggan Wolftrax/Red Rock and the man made ones up behind my house is what I'm looking at.

The current bike - Carrera Vulcan is not in good shape lol

As you were! Would still look for a better spec'd second-hand FS though.

I would agree with the others don't buy a £500 full sus you'll only find it disappointing. £500 will get you a more than capable second hand bike.

Exactly this. If you're looking at £500 new bikes then you'd just manage to get a decent hardtail and even then there would be compromises - usually weight issues and a poorer fork/groupset.

If you really want a FS for that type of money then second hand is the only way to go.

There is no need to buy a carbon bike. In fact, the steel is the best material for a bike. It's the strongest and most durable.

The Rockrider 520S maybe was £500 in 2014, but now it is £369. It seems the original Rockrider 520S became the Rockrider 540S which is now £499.

I recommend both these bikes. There is nothing in the world that could justify a price that is higher than £500 for any bike.

Full suspension bikes are always better than hardtail bikes.

Groups set and fork do. Also full suspension are not always better, they are more suited to more experienced riders due to many factors. A decent hard tail is just as fun but full suspension can help people with back issues. The Voodoo canzone and calibre bossnut for under a 1k seem to offer a lot

Nothing at all wrong with a cheap bike!

I use a cheaper decathlon for the station ride / commute and bobbing to the shops.

The extra £80 which the 500 costs over the 120 looks to get you cable discs and front sus, which won’t be balls on fire amazing, but will do the job.

Eta: I’m guessing it’s park/canal path type riding with the daughter?

The good thing with a decathlon bike is the upgrade bug never seems to bite smile

Must be Decathlon week on Pistonheads. :-)

I just bought the Riverside 120 which is a steel frame and forks, whereas most of the 500 appears to be alloy, plus it gets an extra 38T cog over the 11-34 on the 120. That is good. Disk brakes too.

Don't know if the sus forks would be useful for city riding as they just add weight. Presumably they have a lockout. Good for trails/dirt.

Also see the Halfords Carrera Subway/Parva hybrids.

My Riverside 120 was nicely set-up (from Southampton Decafflon) plus they let you ride the bike around the store if you get there early.

Decathlon frame sizes seem generous: the 19" Medium frame size seems to fit six-footers, with four inches left in the seat-post.

"The good thing with a decathlon bike is the upgrade bug never seems to bite"

Pooey: I just spent £4.99 on a kickstand. :-)

A cheap full sus will probably aggravate your back more than it will make it better. A bike fit would be far more valuable.
