  • thread resurrection!*
So after the disaster of a purchase of my daughters pig iron FS, I managed to find one of these, for spares or repair (perfect) What size shock was it in the end?

Assuming i can get it, all the nice forks/gears/brakes will be swapped over after a quick spray job.

Cool!

150mm. The suspension linkage bottoms out before the shock does on big jumps.

Look forward to seeing it done thumbup

Hi,

This was such an amazing build to follow. If you dont mind, I have a couple of questions?

1) What size frame did you start with?
2) Where did you source your rear shock from?

Cheers

There is no size for the frame, it's a one size Carrera detonate. 24"wheels. Shock came from eBay, not one of the well known brands but it works well for him.

None of the popular brands make 150mm shocks.

Bike still getting used and jumped on a regular basis

I'm silver940 btw, changed my forum name.

Hiya,

OK thanks for the information....

I found some cheap Fox 80RL forks from fleabay and looking at ordering the 150mm shock you did. At the moment my lad has the carrera blast and its a 13" frame. Foe some reason I have a feeling these are a 14 or 15" but still using the 24" wheel.

Tell you what thou, trying to find a detonate for a cheap price without having to drive for 3 hours is a difficult one.

Cheers for the reply and the amazing thread you created. It looks like such a cool project.

All the best
Toby

I missed out on 3 Detonates now, yesterdays one jumped up quite a lot in the last few seconds, and factor in the 4 hour drive to get it I think i'm just going to bite the bullet and buy No2 a new HT.

If you are planning on repainting remember to keep a look out for a Carrera Sol - The girls version. Identical bike just pink.

Any ideas on a decent 24" wheel without paying £300 for some superstar ones?

The original carrera seem to weigh a ton.

Cheers

Alex rims do some 24"rims then any hub should work. I keep my eyes open for them on eBay etc but they don't come up often.

Nice one thanks, That would mean I have to lace them up myself? I am guessing a LBS will charge the earth to spoke and true a new wheel?

Cheers for all your help thou.

PS: that vis of your lad jumping his.... bloody brilliant. Jumps better than I do smile

How did you get the white bushings out of the top of the original rear shock? I am guessing you used the same bushing for the new shock?

A vice, brute force and patience. The White bits are an over sleeve to the alloy bit, once you get them moving they will come away, bit of levering with a screwdriver etc . Once you have got them off you can push the alloy part out using a vice and deep socket. Presses into the new one easily enough. I shaved a little of the white bits too as the new shock was slightly thicker.
