I wish you the best of luck Gruffy. Your ultimate belief that others will break before you do is a great strength.

When the humps (physical or psychological) come and you're wondering why you started out, remember we're watching and willing you on.

The mind is strong, I like to think. I hope my body is up to the demands. I'll be managing my troubled knees through the Alps but if I clear Italy then I'll be confident to the finish, physically.

The last few days have been very tough and I've ended up with 4-5 hours sleep a night. Not the best build-up to the race and I'm already feeling fatigued. Everything is packed except for the rain gloves, which I can't find. I leave for Brussels in 30 minutes.

My thinking exactly... I thought you'd have been banking sleep like crazy... then again, maybe getting your body used to surviving on little sleep might help you.

Either way, the best of luck and a huge amount of respect to you.

It's never really by choice. I'm guilty of taking on too much, so in amongst the prep I've had huge demands on my time and sleep/training were the only variables I had to play with. Both have suffered a bit, but I think the race is 70% mental and 30% physical. As long as my body doesn't give up I'm fairly confident I've done my mental prep.

Best of luck. I reckon this is just about the most exciting 'two wheel' thing I've encountered!

Good luck Darren, I wish you all the best and I will hold off sponsoring you until the later stages where I expect you will need the encouragement to get those legs spinning.

Not sure what preparations the others have done, but even that has been impressive stuff. Your background in ski guiding will I am sure put you in good stead where the wrong decision can be fateful, you have done the hard work getting to the start line, just try and enjoy it now.

In 2 weeks you will be looking back thinking where that time go.

Good luck.

The race sounds incredible. I never knew it ran but have been reading about it since and found reading about the bikes really interesting.

It's really caught my imagination and will be following the progress. Donation also to follow.

Bloody hell, that's quite something - good luck OP!

And fair play to PH for promoting it as TOTD over the usual automobile related articles.

Still time for one last early night and try and catch up on some sleep tonight. Hopefully you don't have too much to do tomorrow morning, and good luck!

Have you ever had a decent nights sleep? You know 7 hours or something?

I imagine watching the trackers on TCR is going to be a case of others sleeping and you just going on and on and on...
