The daily "I cycled to work" thread (Vol 2)

Wrapped up quite warm on the way in, and took the scenic route, 17.5 miles and 800 vertical feet, instead of the normal 7 and 400. Lovely.
Planned correctly, so am about to ride home in shorts and a long sleeve, which should be perfect for the Devon conditions. Might take an indirect route home too...

I cycled to work for the first time on Wednesday.
Decided with a new(ish) baby that it's the only way I'll get out on my bike more.
Really enjoyed it and put me in a much better mood all day. Although I got funny looks turning up on my Nice bike (Spesh tarmac with carbon wheels, Ultegra groupset and Carbon bars/saddle)

Having a break from commuting by bike this week (childcare) so decided to do some much needed maintenance on the 'station' bike, which I've ridden in all weathers including a couple of properly wet rides where I had to wring myself out when I got home! Had noticed creaking noises from a pedal, which fortunately has removable axles (Shimano Saint flats) to find lots of wet runny black grease within, with plenty of evidence of water ingress. A proper clean and stuffed with fresh green Shimano grease and it's as smooth as silk again (for now!)
Gave the chain a clean, as I was feeling in a good mood after my success with the pedals - bloody Park Tools chain cleaning tool broke up internally so the big wheel is now missing all the plastic from inside it that supports the chain as you clean it. ggrrrr. I know I could take the chain off and stick it in a takeaway carton to soak, but the 11 speed chain links really don't like coming on and off routinely, and they're not cheap!

Disaster on Fridays journey home, the chain snapped and I was miles from any form of public transport. Thankfully Mrs M and the kids came and rescued me! I'm sure it will cost me more than the price of a new chain...
New chain fitted (and one spare in the bag) and today's ride in was lovely, noticeably less traffic on the road than last week. Hopefully its the last morning ride that requires winter boots and gloves!

I've snapped one chain in about 9 or 10 years of commuting. I would counter that it's such a rare occurrence that it's not worth carrying a spare.New chain fitted (and one spare in the bag) and today's ride in was lovely, noticeably less traffic on the road than last week. I mean, the weight will slow you down up hills, you have to think of Strava.
Good point, it is my first but the inconvenience is high!
Normally Mrs M wouldn't be around, so under normal circumstances it would of resulted in a very sorry and miserable 8mile walk home!
Its annoying as I normally keep on top of maintenance, especially the chain set, but moving house recently has resulted in maintenance taking a back seat.

Multi tool with chain splitter and a couple of quick links is always good to have.
Thanks, I put the quick links in my bag last nightManaged to elongate my route (Woking to Sunbury) last night to 18m on the way home, used google to plan it during the day, unfortunately it (google)was not aware that a river crossing near Staines was now locked, so I had to double back. No harm done.
Today was the 1st time Ive managed 4 commutes in a row this year, feels good and still very little traffic!
5th day in a row
Due to the lovely weather (here in the south east) this morning, I decided to cycle along the side of the Thames, River Wey and a canal. It maximised the time spent away from general traffic.
Whilst not as quick due to terrian and walkers, it was great fun.
Going to do 20m on the way home, just need to plot my route....
