I have a giant defy composite 2013 with a tiagara 10 speed groupset. Last year i upgraded the wheels to mavic ksyrium elites.

I have been using the bike more this year than ever and was dancing a new bike however part of me thinks this would be a bit crazy as the defy is well suited to my lack of flexibility and lack of descending bottle. Would it be a good idea to upgrade the groups to ultegra?

This would save a bit of cash (i have been looking at new defy's at £2500) and i think would save a bit of weight. It might also give me the new bike feeling!

It's a good frame, and Ultegra is a different world from Tiagra., so probably a good move if you are using the bike a lot, and a good time of year to do it. Will feel like a new bike.

But a whole Ultegra group-set will not be cheap!

About £500 I believe, plus finding someone to fit it.

Would you run to £900 for Ultegra Di2 ?

That would make a difference that you really would notice

I don't think my frame will take di2.

If you're wanting a new groupset I don't think I'd bother with Ultegra unless you are that concerned about weight.
I'd go for 105 5800 and save some money/upgrade other bits too.

105 and Ultegra are the same except of the weight.

I dunno, I have both on different bikes, the Ultegra seems to be a bit snappier in the gear changes, I prefer it but it's not worth the premium over the 105. The new 105 5800 is much better though, the 5700 was pretty cack to be honest, the shifters wore out quickly and the front mech was doggy doo-doo.

The cheapest place is usually Merlin for groupsets, should be less than 100 quid for fitting.

I had Tiagra 9 speed on my Cannondale and recently upgraded to 105 5800

After some initial teething problems the shifting is night and day in comparison. Cost was around £450 including fitting plus you can recover some of that by selling old shifters etc.

I didn't see the point of a new frame when my bike as is fits perfectly.

I disagree. I bought a bike with 105 and upgraded it pretty quickly to Ultegra, the difference it really noticeable with the shifters in particular which have a shorter throw and smoother feeling action. For the extra it costs I'd have Ultegra all day long.

It's just wires - no harder to accommodate than a pre-wireless bike computer?

It can be done but it's rarely pretty...

If you want electronic shifting on a non-Di2 frame then Etap would be a better bet.

Composite 0 had Di2 that year. I can't see why you wouldn't be able to fit it.

Just thought up an issue with upgrading to 11 speed. My turbo trainer is a tacx neo with a 10 speed cassette. This is shared with the wife who also has a 10 speed tiagara bike. Me changing to 11 speed would mean a massive faff on changing cassettes when changing bikes wouldn't it?

I would only upgrade the bike if I was going Di2 otherwise new groupset.
