Looking at a hardtail MTB and have the option on group sets.

Thoughts on Sram vs Shimnao? Is the Eagle as smooth and quiet as they claim?

Brakes would be either Guide rs4 or XT.

Eagle is the new trendy kit everyone wants but I think replacing parts as they wear out will be very expensive, compare the cost of new Cassettes, rear mech, cranksets etc for both.

Eagle is top tier SRAM and XT is second tier Shimano. Eagle is very expensive, so if the two bikes are the same price then the Eagle equipped model would seem by far the better value. But that's assuming everything else on the bikes is the same. So many variables...

If Eagle is anything like XX1 then the cassettes are expensive to replace but appear to be incredibly hard wearing.
I fitted XX1 to my bike just after it was launched in 2013 and I'm still running the same cassette today. It's covered god knows how many miles since then and I tend to replace the chain every year but I think it's still pretty good going.
By comparison I use XT cassettes on my other bike and they don't last anywhere near as long.

From my experience the shifting on XT 11 speed isn't that good, not even close to as smooth as XTR. Not sure what the Eagle shifting will be like but again if it's anything like XX1 then it'll be very good.

The bikes I've tried, I've really liked the Guide brakes over xt. Ok at my speed cheese would stop me but the feel and ability to set the levers how I liked them won me over.

As for eagle v xt, xt has 2 pluses as far as I'm concerned, first is you can get a 2x, where as SRAM limits you to a 1x. 2nd is xt is available as Di2, there's no etap eagle yet (was hoping to see this at Sea Otter this week, as etap is also fully wireless, and di2 isnt, yet)

Eagle has the range cassette though, with a 10 - 50, where as xt is 11 - 46.
