How well have the wheels been inspected? Having just had a wheel almost collapse riding along at 20mph on the flat (with no pre-event to warrant a failure) I would ensure the tyres and rim tape are removed just to satisfy yourself that the rims are complete ok, rather that when doing 80kph down an Alp!

Ouch that sounds painful - no reason at all? Did the outer rim collapse? What wheels?

Not painful at all, loud bang as 4 spokes and nipples decided they didn't want to be connected to the rim.

Hand built SL23 Pacenti's on DA hubs, there have been issues mainly with version 1 rims and 24H version 2 rims. But as Malcolm at the cycle clinic said to me today, we can add 28H rims to that list as well.

The importer will replace it with a Forza rim under warranty, to be honest that rim is so new I am going to get the DA hub built into a Kinlin 31mm deep rim and Malcolm can sort his stock out (the Kinlin is cheaper than the Forza) so the new spokes should be almost no extra charge. He isn't charging for the rebuild.

Great wheels up to that point! Slight thread diversion but there are certain things that can break and not be catastrophic, wheels, forks and frame I thing fall into this group.

I am not sure I would ride that frame again not worth the risk, I have a front wheel off Thule roof rack and find it pretty decent. Touchwood haven't forgotten to do it up yet!

Whether you take the front wheel off or not is a separate debate, friend of mine doesn't despite Specialized saying you shouldn't support the frame on the down tube.

A woman in my neck of the woods lost an insecure matress on an A road.

It caused a head on collision as the following car tried to avoid it and someone died.

The driver was done for causing death by dangereous driving.

Something to remember.
really?

Careless maybe but there must be more to the story to make it Dangerous surely?

I've got two similar stories -

My uncle had loaded the family up, and was driving down to catch the ferry to france. His kids bikes on a boot mounted cycle carrier. Half way down the M20 someone pulls along side and honks and waves, my uncle thinks its a bit odd, but they drive off so he doesn't think about it. At the ferry terminal realises he only has one bike on the back, and realises why the other car honked so much! to make it worse it was my bike handed down to my cousin, not that it was big enough for me.

We were off on family holiday camping (5 of us) all with bikes, and my dads car was loaded up, trailer full, with my bike and the camping chairs on the roof, the other 4 bikes on the back of the car. Leaving a service station, my dad misses the exit sign post and ends up driving towards the car wash, decides the best way is to go through it, forgetting about my bike. Not the best move, it broke the forks and front wheels of my bike, a couple of the chairs, and dented the roof panel so it leaked. It was a daihatsu fourtrak, and the roof panel had to be shipped from japan, so it took ages to be repaired.

I always try to stop between my house and the motorway (about 2 miles) to check the bikes are still secure on the roof.

You can get done for causing death by careless driving too... it was probably that.

That's not good news, glad you're ok and haven't suffered any lasting injury. I've got the same wheels as you on 24H bulit by Malcolm which have been faultless. Think I might good look over them as I can't risk another fall this year...already on first name terms with the Nurse at the walk in centre!

Did the rim crack between the 4 nipple holes?

Blimey I'm an utter jobsworth when I have bikes on the car , I'll tripple check all the fixings , do a test run round block , stick to 65 and check the bike after 30 mins of driving !

Just got back from hols and had a bit of space in the boot so dismantled my bike and managed to fit my carbon wilier and both wheels on top of a weeks worth of family crap in a Volvo XC70 boot! Was really scared of bending the mech hanger as it only just squeezed in so was very careful some bends were taken at walking pace !!!

My mate saw a nasty crash on m4 due to bikes falling off a car , quite scary really

Only localised solid either side of nipple hole. Malcolm said he has had other V2 rims back getting replaced under warranty.

Looks like they've just pulled through. Any signs of corrosion? white powder, etc.
