Hello all,

I am looking for a new Mountain Bike, had my current one since 1999. At the time it was the first new Bike I had ever bought myself. Back then it was hardtail or full suspension...end of decisions!!

For the new Bike I am looking for an all round Bike, so Full Suspension is on my agenda.

I have been reading lots of reviews, watching lots of videos on YouTube and speaking to people who are into your Mountain Bikes.

My shortlist was Specialized Stumpjumper and YT Jeffsy. The guys with the MTB knowledge said stay away from the YT as they have seen cracked frames upon delivery of brand new bikes and of course any Warranty issues will have to be dealt with via Germany not a local shop.

I am happy to consider 2016 bikes as I am a Road Biker mostly. On the 2016 thought process I have been looking at a Scott Genius 710 Plus. Can you fit 29'' wheels on this? Anybody experience of this bike?

Had a look at Used but my concern is not knowing how hard a life it has had, not like a road Bike which might need a new cassette, chain, headset or other running gear....you have expensive suspension components to consider.

Any other considerations for a Full Suspension bikes for around the £3k bracket?

Thanks in advance

What height are you? There are some very good deals on last years Spec and Scott bikes. U.K. Companies like Bird and Cotic are worth a look too.

All Plus bikes should be able to run 29" wheels, less so the other way due to tyre clearance.

I am 6ft tall with 84cm inseam.

2016 bikes are perfectly good to me. Places I usually look are Paul's Cycles, Winstanleys and Buy-a-Bike for previous year stock. Any others?

Had a look at Bird and Whyte.

The 'guys with MTB knowledge' are asshats.
YT are a great company to deal with, and their bikes are astounding VFM I've had a Capra from them, best mate has a Jeffsy. Both brilliant bikes.
The stories of cracking are predominantly from paint issues a good few years ago, very rare to see any cracks now. And any that did have issues were replaced under warranty.

My mate's Jeffsy blows away everyone that rides it, and it's just the base model. It's a supremely capable all rounder.

If you're worried about sizing, it's worth noting the are 3 demo days in the UK coming up in the next few weeks.

Putting that aside, what's your budget, and how tall are you?

The MTB guys work in the industry and see a lot of frames/bikes. One of them works for wrapping firm and said they had received 3 brand new bikes that were cracked an had to be sent straight back.

To be honest the Jeffsy was at the top of my list, value for money, reviews, spec and all important they look superb (all to my eyes of course).

I am around 6ft tall with an inseam of 84.5cm.

Budget has crept up and up. I was initially looking at sub £2k but then the Jeffsy CF Pro and Pro Race blew that to pieces. I would still say ideally around the £3k mark.

Saw the 2016 Scott Genius 710 Plus online at a couple retailers with decent discount hence asking about them earlier.

I have a Jeffsy and also read a german MTB forum for YT riders. There are hundreds of posts from Jeffsy owners and I cannot recall one single post about a cracked Jeffsy frame.

As FD says, there were occasional posts from Capra owners with paint cracking.

It may be the earlier Capra they were referring to.

BOR - what was your reason for choosing the Jeffsy if you don't mind me asking?

VFM, all-rounder - you were right with a Jeffsy, I'd go with the 27.

Be wary of 'Industry' people and their opinion of mail-order bikes, even if it doesn't effect them directly the direct sales bikes represent a massive change in the industry that many aren't happy about.

Truth is their frames will be made in the same sorts of places as 99% of the other brands, discount brands, mainstream and boutique these days - with everything going carbon, few are made in house anymore. Yeah, if there's an issue you need to deal with Germany, but have an issue with another other brand and your bike shop will be dealing with an importer, who'll be dealing with the factory - one long distant conversation or 3 people in a chain, all with their own agenda?

I haven’t heard anything about cracked YTs in years, not any that haven’t cased a massive double or something at speed and in the great tradition of Germany they don’t tend to reinvent the wheel, Jeffsy might be a new line, but it owes it’s design to the Capra and the Wicked both robust bikes after the first Capras had some issues and they reviewed it.

I was tentatively looking for an additional bike so my son could steal my 2008 Cube Stereo.

I kept seeing great reviews for the Capra, so started leaning that way, but felt in all honesty that it would be too much bike for what I do.

When the Jeffsy was released it seemed to build on the good points of the Capra, all the reviews were great, and you can't argue with the spec. It also looks great and doesn't have that 29er look about it.

I am very happy so far - bike is fast rolling, stable, steering is fast and precise, which I didn't expect, quality is excellent.

Sizing is the problem. I am 6ft 2ins and 84cm so was right on the changeover point between L and XL. I went for XL after comparing the reach dimensions with my L Cube. But this time I wanted to alter the fit by using a shorter stem rather than fitting a longer stem as on the Cube.

I think at 6ft /84cm you should go for a size L-should be perfect for you.

There is a new trail bike review in enduro magazine - http://enduro-mtb.com/en/bike-situations-nine-exci...

I have a 2015 Capra and love it, survived some pretty epic crashes at the Mega and hasn't cracked. As echoed above, the majority of the industry (having been in it myself) hate YT, how dare they sell direct and cut everyone out? Any frames have the odd issues, and you hear about them, but at the same time you don't hear from the majority are fine. I had a Snappier Zesty before, I ragged the living st out of it... and it didn't snap.

I would agree for 90% of the riding in the UK, the Capra is overkill, I do feel like a bit of a chump riding a 170mm travel bike around my local woods that have a 100m altitude drop at most, but things have come on so much which it means its still doable.

The Jeffsy, must be a corker.... really want to try one, but I am supposed to be thinning out my collection, not adding!

Dog eat dog in every industry these days....same in mine, clients milk you for info then some will go direct and save themselves a fee from us. Used to wind me up but now its a case of win some and lose some.

I will try and get across to Sherwood Pines in May and give the Jeffsy a go.

Is a 2016 Scott Genius 710 Plus now worth considering? Spec is good and should be able to run 29er wheels as well as the plus wheels.

My Mate has a YT Capra, it doesn't get used enough but has been put through some pretty brutal rides and has had no problems, apart from the Seat Post failing (RS Reverb) - no issues with the frame.

Back to the original post - my brother got a Stumpjumper from Rutland, reduced from £3.5k to £2k recently, he got the 650b but they had the 29er also, don't know if they are still available but was good value.

Have you had a look at Canyons? I've had a Spectral for a few years and its been faultless apart from general maintenance and having the Seat Post replaced (RS Reverb).

I ride a Stumpy, great all rounder and I have a friend who rides a Capra without any issues at all, both 2016 bikes.

Does anybody even make a crap bike for £2k these days? I like just about every MTB I look at laugh

The 2017 price hike from Specialized leaves a bad taste!! I understand Scott 2017 prices are rising too!?

YT will look even stronger value then.

Canyon - had a poor experience with them when buying a simple pair of POC glasses last year. Put me off them unfortunately.

Always found Giant very helpful, had an old TCR Road Bike which was indestructible and currently got a Defy Adcanced SL which is superb.

Good point, suppose like any other Warranty, only as good as the people dealing with it. Plus more people involved the more chance it goes wrong, gets delayed.

Both the YT and the Scott will be great bikes. I currently own a 2016 Capra cf and a 2015 scott spark 720 cf and couldn't recommend either more highly. The stories of cracked paint/frames were from 2014/15 Capra cfs and I haven't heard a single case since and none on any Jeffsy models.
The Jeffsy is a no brainier really, particularly if it is going to be your only bike. It is a great all rounder and nothing will get close to it for the price.
If you don't fancy direct sell though I would also check out the new Scott spark range as it is now more of a do it all trail bike and less xc focused though they won't compare to the Jeffsy in terms of value for money.

It will be an only Mountain Bike hence looking for all round ability and the Jeffsy keeps being mentioned as the go to bike.

Saw a Dirt magazine review on YouTube of the Radon Swoop 170 10.0 and they seemed stunned by it but more pricey than the Jeffsy I think and would not be able to ride one like I hopefully can soon with the Jeffsy.

The 2016 Scott Genius 710 Plus was only mentioned as it seemed cheap at £2499 but it is plus tyres. However I see GMBN and few other YouTube channels really rate Plus sized.

Oh the world of MTB is so diverse these days!! spin

I've got two YT's a Wicked (Enduro) and a Tues (Downhill).

Both have been properly used and abused, crashed, bailed out from at high altitude, smashed into tree's - christ, I even tore one off the roof when I forgot it was on there and drove under a height restriction at Sainsbury's one evening.

Both have been utterly faultless.
