i am looking at a car which has been modded somewhat.

since i know nothing mechnical about cars, can someone here tell me if it is a decent (mod-wise) example or not... or likely to cause problems (other parts getting consequently stressed out by the upgrades)

the car is a 135i BMW, which does a little over 300bhp stock i believe. this one is tuned to 450bhp, which seems a big hike, especially for a RWD. i hear the stock 135 definitely has overhead for tuning... but an extra 150bhp?!

here is the car, you see the mods listed.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/bmw/450-bhp-bmw-135i-m-s...

what questions should i be asking?

would one of those used AA/RAC car checks be useful?

what do you think?

thank you.

a no from me, with my knowledge limited to VAG cars, I'd expect bigger or hybrid turbos for that kind of gain. Also, who measures brake pad life in miles?

I think he's being a little hopeful at 450+ bhp laugh

A remap on these will see close to 400, with the extra bits and bobs, maybe just over 400bhp is more realistic.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a modified car like this without seeing a build thread or similar on a forum so I can get a taste for the chap. Has he done the mods professionally with no expense spared? On the cheap? Bodged? Does he rag this st out of it everywhere or mechanically sympathetic etc?

It's a N55 in these I believe. More like 60bhp from the JB4. http://www.burgertuning.com/N55_Stage2_Jb4.html

Edit: the 2008 should have the N54 (twin turbo), but he mentioned twin scroll which is N55.. So who knows!

Looking at the mod list, appears to have had a decent amount of money spent on it

I think the first question i would ask is 'can i have a copy of the dyno print'

to the point where he will say something like..

last owner did the mods, he quoted the power output.. it deffo feels at least 450, i've been in 500+ BHP GT-rs and this pulls harder than them.

or, he lost it.

either way.. i would say 380 max

what's this? is it an issue if there is not one?

e.g. SHOULD it have one with these mods? i have no problem with a modded car, but as long as it's done corrrectly so there are no nasty knock on effects or excessive wear and tear etc. as i said though, my mechincal knowledge is close to zero :s

Buy this

Spend the remainder on modding it yourself.

this has higher miles, and the mods would cost waayyy more than the change. (i can get the guy down in price)

plus, this one is at the other end out the country.

Got one (well two) in the pictures. Look like the Burger Motorsport ones to me.

then I would say walk away.

Its high risk, and then high expense to sort out somebody else's selection of mods.

And its on Gum Tree ok, so Run, don't walk

"No Records Of Insurance Damage" is an interesting choice of words?

wouldn't the HPI check tell if it has been damaged?

i did have a modded JDM impreza before this without any mechanical knowledge... i was even more ignorant than i am now!

and what about these used car AA checks? would that be worthwhile?

thanks.

At least the tyres look good. Two new owners in the last 12 months, though... https://cazana.com/uk/car/LB08SLU

A good rule of thumb is that most modified cars are worth *less* than an unmolested example. And a lot of the fun with modified cars is choosing what you're going to change, doing the work and seeing for yourself what difference it makes. If you have no mechanical skills I wouldn't touch anything as heavily modded as this.

That's the kind of car to buy engine wise they're fairly minor Mods (the standard intercooler is to small & suffers heat soak even on the standard car) the chassis mods are all desirable & I bet he has all the standard parts to (keep these as you can offer them as part of the sale when you want to move it on) when people say a car with mods is worth less that's just not true (no you won't get your money back on the mods but the same applies if you load a car up with optional extras) if you're buying a car & planning to add upgrades then why not buy one with some/all of the work already done as long as they've bought decent kit then it's a no brainer not to buy a standard car.
