Just out of curiosity....what is the most amount of elevation gain you've done in a single road ride before, and how far was that ride? For me, only 7100ft in 104 miles, although tomorrow I'm likely to be getting more than that!

One of the stages in the Giro this year had over 18000ft eek

I did 17,500 ft of climbing and 96 miles one day last year, followed 2 days later with just under 15,000ft of climbing and 120 miles. Raid Pyrenees which avg'd 95-100 miles a day for 4 days and 50 on the last day. All good fun I'd say.

I Everested two years ago, 9,000m and 320 km. It took 27 hours though! 67 repeats of Boxhill if you fancy it - most southern attempts at Everesting take that, it's hard to find a single hill with much over 130m of altitude gain. Got my eye on a future one in Italy, it's only 5 repeats!

I did the Marmotte once which was 5,180m of climbing spread over 174km.

I've also done Raid Pyrénéen which was 18,000m of climbing in 720km spread over 4 1/2 days. With luggage.

Have ridden the Raid Pyrenean three times albeit supported (last one in 2007 followed by the Ariegoise sportive a few days later).

Top of the Tourmalet June 2004 - best hand on hip pose on the left laugh

Plus the Tour des Cols in the Alps in Aug /Sept 2007 - 12 days actual riding, 38 major climbs including Stages 8 & 9 of the 2007 Tour de France. None of that hotels business, we camped and you can't beat having to put up a tent when you've ridden over a few mountains!

27 Aug: Stage 1: Neydens--St Jean de Sixt 124km 2,891m
28 Aug: Stage 2: St Jean de Sixt--Tignes (Tour de France 07 Stage 8) 175km 3,160m
29 Aug: Stage 3: Tignes--Briançon 174km 2,925m
30 Aug: Stage 4: Briançon--Les Thuiles 114km 2,325m
31 Aug: Stage 5: Les Thuiles--Digne Les Bains 210km 3,986m
01 Sep: Stage 6: Dignes Les Bains--Bedoin 169km 1,954m
02 Sep: Stage 7: Bedoin--Nyons 105km 2,300m
03 Sep: REST DAY
04 Sep: Stage 8: Nyons--Meaudre 173km 3,600m
05 Sep: Stage 9: Meaudre--Boug d'Oisans--202km 3,272m
06 Sep: Stage 10: Bourg d'OisansAlpe d'Huez, Les Deux Alpes, Bourg d' 83km 2,278m
07 Sep: Stage 11: Bourg d'Oisans--St Jean de Sixt 177km 4,796m
08 Sep: Stage 12: St Jean de Sixt--Neydens

Didn't manage all the full length of a few of the early stages due to picking up a heavy cold, but managed to shake it off as we went along.

Sadly the organiser Andy was killed riding the London to Paris a few years later frown

Stopped riding myself in 2008 due to illness (blood clots) and started again in 2011, but not at the level I was then unfortunately due to a few heart related issues.

Mallorca 312 which was 5000+m of elevation spread over, you guessed it, 312km. Legs were pretty tired after that.

Although, I have to say, the Maratona dles Dolomites was probably a harder ride, though only 4,200m over 140-ish km.

Maratona will always be tough with the Giau towards the end.

Crikey.

I took her indoors on a cycling tour of Norfolk and she complained about the 300 foot hills
just south of Cromer and the "high average" we had to maintain of 15 miles per day !

Never been on a cycling holiday with her since ;->

Personally, I keep distance downto about 30 miles a day and height downto 1,000 feet.

Yep, 10km at 10% with the Garmin reading 40 degrees one year! Still, when you get to the top, they're usually dishing out prosecco, cheese and salami...

Well I wanted to do a hilly route today and ended up doing 117 miles and 12600ft of climb......all on my own! I actually drove to the start and had loads of spare gels/bottles of drink etc in the car so I didn't have to carry stupid amounts with me.

That was a long time out on my own! Enjoyed it though and didn't bonk which was nice!

5450m in 158km in Tenerife a few years ago, doing Marmotte in two weeks. Binning it today literally at the end of the drive was a great start to a 50miler forearm, shoulder and top of quad all bruised and road rash. Could have been worse!

I did it last Sunday and it was 29c, 40c must be hell on earth. Not the prettiest of climbs in the area either.

South Downs Way, which when it is off road makes it even tougher. Will be doing the Marmotte in July 15000ft in 174 :'( Lord Help me.

Probably in Mallorca last yr ... Puig Major and Sa Colabra so 15,000ft over about 96 miles. I rode up a couple of the largest climbs in the Moors at the weekend ... one of which at its steepest is 30% and the average 13-14% and still only managed 5300ft in 88 miles.

I'd prefer 15,000ft over there as opposed to 15,000ft in the UK any day wink

We did a Welsh Coast to Coast last year, into a 35mph headwind all day. 200ish miles and 17,250ft climbing. Big day out.
