Moving into the world of power, just nabbed a Powertap Pro built on an A23 rim so modern wide profile. Bought with a Shimano freehub but I also have Campag on 2 bikes with Shimano on the commuter/winter so I've got a Campag freehub coming too.

Kept getting a numb arm on my commuter.

Step 1 of my multistep plan was to buy a shorter stem with an increased rise.

The gel pads and gel bar tape should arrive soon, hopefully that, and not stretching to reach the bars should stop the issue!

Bought myself a Giant Rail lid a couple of weeks ago, I've spent the best part of a year deciding what to have and whether I want to swap my comfy but cheap and cheerful Met lid for a new one but this was the most comfortable I've tried by a long way. The Met is staying as a spare though.

I discovered a couple of the fingers on my gloves had ripped just as we were setting off on Saturday so as there was a shop where we parked it seemed rude not to. They also work with an iPhone screen which is a bonusz

Recently, quite simply, st loads

A few weeks ago, winter arrived, so service time and new cold-weather gear...
Long-sleeved, fleece-lined Endura top to wear under my new PH jersey
A pair of Endura long-fingered gloves - my first in about 30 years
Larsen TT rear tyre
XT 40T front chainring
XT 11-34T cassette
Already had a chain

That got me through about 2 weeks, when, last week, I managed to mangle both front and rear mech in a single ride. Have bodged both to keep me going. Rear mech is SRAM X9 with matching levers, and due to SRAM's new pricing policy, I've used this as an excuse to ditch SRAM and go from 2x10 to 1x11. Shame, as I've been happy with SRAM rear mechs for about 10 years. Anyway today, AusPost delivered...

XT 11-42T cassette
11-sp Shimano chain
Blackspire 36T chainring (blue) - will likely be main use
RaceFace 38T chainring (green) - choice matters
XT 11-sp rear mech

At which point the rear brake has suddenly and decisively given up the ghost. Avid Elixirs now bin-bound and just ordered...

Shimano Zee front and rear
Funn riser bar, in blue, to finish things off

That lot is on top of the Fox 34 150mm forks I fitted back in March.

I reckon total spend in the last 4-5 months is about AU$1800, which is faintly ridiculous on bike coming up for 6 years old, with 26" wheels, but I do kinda enjoy hucking around on it, and that lot is still cheaper than a new equivalent bike... No, it is definitely cheaper than a new bike, really, it is...

Not even thinking about what I could've put that money towards. Nope, not even a little bit.

The Park Tools gauge said "nearly at 0.75 old boy - better think about getting a new chain".

So today I was up in Reading, and I popped into Decathlon.

Got myself a KMC X10-EL chain for the princely sum of £17.99, as it was cunningly disguised as a B-Twin(Decathlon) own brand generic chain...

Fitted and subjected to a "spin up and down the street" teat ride all seemed well. But no, out on a 'real world' MTB ride this evening it refused to play nice with the 11-tooth sprocket on the cassette. So now I'll have to find somewhere local with a 10 speed 11-36 tooth cassette for reasonable money.

Harrrrrrrrrrumph! irked

Also, the old chain was a Shimano "CN-HG95 HG-X Sil-Tec 10 speed chain". We've had a reasonably dry summer yet it's lasted only 585 miles. Fitted 12th May 2017, and used exclusively with "Squirt" wax based dry lube from the start. Am I being unreasonable expecting a bit more in the way of mileage from a chain? Or is 585 miles about the "going rate" for a well used MTB chain on sandy heathland and loamy natural single-track trails?

Garmin edge 1000 arrived yesterday. Need to get it mounted and set up but I already like the "plan a loop x km long from this location" feature. Just what I need to help me find new and interesting routes around me!

Not 'bought' as such, but I have been designing and making things. I've got a Giant Defy with a D-Fuse seatpost and it was irritating me that my rear light kept swinging left or right of centre as that is where it felt happy! I've made this nice little adaptor so that now it doesn't!

Some maintenance aids for a new bike.

One of these - because it looks like a great idea

And one of these - because it's cheap and will take up way less space than my portable stand.

I've just bought my first roadbike since I was a kid, nearly 40 years ago. I bought a mountain bike a few months ago and have enjotpyed riding the muddy trails nearby, but fancied a go at roads as a way to lose weight.

I've zero aspirations to become anything other than someone who is building / maintaining fitness at it.

Well pleased with the bike. A Nero Pavé with full 105 mech (is that the right description?)

This was taken in Southport after a 23 mile ride there, followed by a slightly different, but equally long route home. Quite pleased at having covered 85 miles since picking it up on Monday. If the weather wasn't so bloody awful it'd be more!

It could only be one colour realistically couldn't it hehe My mountain bike is a much more garish yellow though.

It'll suit my planned charity ride from Manc to Blackpool in early October.

As the owner of "The Snot Rocket" : A luminous green orro terra, I say a brave colour is the way to go.

Great effort though and glad you are enjoying it.

Loving it and I like loud and garish colours on stuff like this, my motocross motorbike gear is a sight to behold. The comment on colour is merely a bit of football banter from elsewhere on PH smile

I've only got the Edge 500, but using the Strava route creator feature has the same pitfalls. I've been taken up bridleways, byways, and even footpaths sometimes, despite telling it I was making a "Road Ride". Still, I got to wrestle some (virtual) trophies from the local MTB boys. That was funny when they got a bit bent out of shape, flagging my ride and straight out accusing me of "cheating"...

...the limits of Google's streetview car at either end of one such "detour".

Because I am (relatively) weak and light (64kg) I try to reduce all weight from me and the bike...within a tightish budget...so today I bought these shoes...

Northwave Extreme 3S...Very low weight CA 430 grams, stiff carbon soled, low stack height (co-developed with Speedplay), durable uppers...good value too at 115 quid. These are the first stiff and light shoes I have owned. I can't wait to try them.

I bought Northwaves because I have been using their cheap Fighter model for the past 3 years...

Which were cheap but they have also been comfy and durable....I will keep them for wet/training rides. Hopefully sizing will be similar between their models!
