Cycle Republic/Halfords list this Carrera Vanquish Disc for £340 (so a little over budget, but I like discs) https://www.cyclerepublic.com/bikes/road-bikes/car...

I just bought a used trek 2.1 (2013-2014), cost new £1200 ish I believe, I paid £350 for it, it included some peddles, a pair of shoes with nearly new cleats (not my size but I can punt them on), pump, saddle bag, lights. The thing looks like it's never been ridden apart from some dirt marks on the white bar tape.

There are some real bargains out there.

No great loss, I don't think. For £300 second hand I think you can get something quite nice that if you catch the bug, you'll keep as a winter bike or be able to easily fit on.

You didn't buy it did you?

Probably abit overkill for my commute, but the geartrain and brakes should be much higher quality than anything new for that price!

It is now mine! Bubbling on the paint but it rides well, no creaks under load so bb etc should be okay. Never used a road bike before, very different but much easier to pick up speed!

Thanks for your advice guys, let's see if I am in full lyrca and one of those strange hats in 6 months!

I would go new. You walk into shop, choose bike and in some cases, you can walk out with the bike. Not going to happen with a used bike.

Don't forget to factor in your time when it comes to finding a used bike too.

Just wanted to keep this thread going as Im also looking for a cheap new bike, below £350 and have been considering a Carrera Velos http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/c... I've also spoted this http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-race200-93309... and wondered what people thought?

I had a Triban for a while and would thoroughly recommend as a cheap way into road cycling. I stupidly sold mine to mate when I bought my Canyon, but with hindsight should have kept it as a winter bike

Join British Cycling, get 10% off everything in Halfords, then the Carrera is £198, hard to beat new, at that price?

All 3 bikes in the OP look like better bikes to me at around £300, but maybe not one and a half times better, so it depends how important that extra £100 is to you?

I went in to have a look at the Carrera on saturday, and left having paid for it! Pick it up next monday but it felt very nice to sit on and very well made for the price. Couldn't fault it!

It is amazing how much bike you can get for your money from places like halfords etc!

Whilst this thread is alive, which shoes do i but for these pedals? spd sl or spd? they seem to be a mix of both...

Can you get a better photo showing the cleat interface?

They look like A520 pedals to my (untrained) eye, so SPS mountain-bike style recessed cleats, but honestly you couldn't have taken a less helpful photo! Not a criticism just an observation....

If they are MTB style pedals, you can get a road-style shoe for the recessed cleat.

Cheers

Thanks for that, pic was from ebay ad so not great. Found the spec tonight before my first ride out and they're spd, so just ordered http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302387424951" Target="_blank" rel="nofollow">these puppies
