- PedalPowered road ride planned for Sunday 1st Oct starting in Oxted. Sign-up here: https://beta.doodle.com/poll/2d3nn7cxzga49sv7
Meet at the Ellice Road Car Park at 10:00am for a 10:30 depart.
The intended route is here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/25441744
This is a social ride, there will be coffee/cake stop/s and options to miss bits out.

In a 2018 ride London thread there was some talk of the Surrey Hills and a surprising number talking about the hills just into Kent near Westerham

I thought it might be fun to put a ride together and have a little Pedal Powered meet accessible at least to those in the area, in London or prepared to travel a little.

Lots of options for routes, maybe something like this which I put together when a friend was visiting from Scotland so he could tick off a few of the "100 climbs". We can tone it up or down depending on who's coming or make sections optional. I think a cake stop would be essential.

I won't get too far into the details/dates right now, let's just see how many are up for the idea in principal.

I might be up for that, depending on dates and times. I'm near Shoreham, so I'll either drive up and do the lot or ride up and do some of it...

Depending when this is - I may be up for it. I'm from Manchester, but get free weekend travel on Virgin Trains so getting down to the start isn't a show stopper.

Im up for this, so count me in.

You will be disappointed with Box Hill. It is the most overrated "hump" in the word thanks to the 2012 Olympics. A person who has never ridden a bike before could get up it with little effort. Even Boardman and the female presenter were slating it when commentating during the UCI Ride London Pro Race.

Toys, Ide and Star are a couple of hills my club ride in Kent if you're looking for some others to do.

Fair enough.
Still want to do it, if only to beat my Strava friends Haha

Keen on the idea but may be worth adding a bit more distance so we can earn our cake?

What date are you thinking?

This year or next? If this year I'd probably struggle for a pass.

I was thinking of doing something this year, but I wouldn't rule out doing it again.

How does Sept 23rd sit with people?

I'm happy to do a longer ride, but didn't want to put anyone off too soon, I think the distance/cake ratio depends on the relative appetites of those actually taking part!

This ride is unlikely to take in Box Hill and Leith Hill, there is the ride London for that, this ride is to take in the hills over near Westerham like Toys, Ide, Chalkpit Lane, White Lane, Yorks Hill etc, there is a plenty of challenge to equal Surrey staples. A longer ride could take in climbs in both areas, but the transfer between might be a bit tedious.

I'm in in principle. Going to have to sort out freeing up the date closer to the day, and I'd have to drive over from Farnborough so parking at or near the meeting point would be nice.

As for the hills? Lovely! Count me in. You'll be waiting at the tops for me, but I've long wanted to do a couple more of the "100 Climbs" hills and this sounds like the ideal opportunity to combine a few of them with meeting some more PHers too. "Cool! Double prizes!"

If I am around, I will try to come along, if that's ok?

I have ridden a couple of these hills this morning and will do others over the weekend.

After the heavy rain of Wednesday Yorks hill was even more of a challenge than usual, the surface was like a river bed with mud & stones, I had traction issues at the steeper part, which I can assure you was not down to excessive power from the feeble legs! smile

All are welcome! I've done Yorks when it's been like that.

I'll be out that way on my home from work tonight, but going down hill.

I've had worse experiences up Yorks,
I thought I was going well when someone shot past me....
I went to pay my respects at the top to find it was Rob Gough, who had won the hill climb up there for a few successive years.
At least that made me feel a bit better about my attempt. smile

23rd is a week after Revolve so I may be a bit sluggish but if I can get away on the day then I'll join you for this. If folk want a longer route we can just add extra loops at the start or finish (plenty to choose from out that way) and the shorter route just gets more cafe time.
