I'm more interested to hear System Paranoia's credentials. He seems very confident about a topic he clearly knows little about ( and is currently frantically googling no doubt).

Just looked up the regulations, it seems that if a bike is sold fully assembled then it must have both front and back brakes, however if sold as a kit or part assembled, it merely has to able to be assembled with front and rear brakes (and other safety items such as reflectors.)

Can we just get you two to agree this with a game of spin-the-bottle?

If you ride a normal bike, you have to have two independent braking systems: one “which operates on the front wheel”, and one which operates on the back. Alternatively, if you ride certain special kinds of bike, the rules can be differen, one of which include
fixed-wheel bikes (i.e. bikes where “one or more of the wheels is incapable of rotating independently of the pedals”). They have to have a front brake to fit the regulation, so a fixie without a front brake is illegal.

The legislation comes from the Pedal Cycle Regulations, which are enforcable, and yes police can prosecute you for them. You can't get a fixed penalty, you would have to summonsed to court.

Well that would be an assault, and a heavy handed approach for sure. Would you like it if for not wearing a seatbelt, rather than being stopped politley you were rammed by a patrol car?

He has left the party, tail between legs.

In the case of compliance with braking systems push bike's - did you know ( insert lightbulb emoji here ) "Any constable in uniform is empowered to stop a cyclist and test the cycle for compliance with these regulations, and to enter the premises where a cycle is kept if it has been involved in an accident up to 48 hours previously" ???

Thats your house they are coming knocking on systemparanoia, or should I say, crashing down the door and aksing questions later lol
