Anybody else feeling the same, just no let up in how wet it is, never known a winter like it. I know it’s not great for Road rides, but to even get the Hybrid out to do my Canel towpath rides is a no no. Having to go to the health club to swim most mornings just to keep myself moving. What’s everyone else doing to keep active

Yep, was thinking just the same yesterday, we might not have had any really severely low temps or record breaking levels of snow fall, but it's just been generally cold, wet and windy constantly, I can't recall a single day in the last 3 months that has been even vaguely pleasant.

And the forecast for next week looks less than encouraging.

I might look into a Turbo trainer, but afraid it would get boring and at £650 it’s a nice set of wheels.

Running. Not too bad in this weather.

Try to get out on the bike once a week.

A perfectly useable turbo w/resistance can be bad for £60-100 on eBay. You don’t need all this “smart trainer” bks.
A set of rollers can also be had for a similar price.

I bought a smart trainer for £180 with British cycling discount and it's been a game changer. Lots of structured training indoors and felt really strong when I have ridden outside. Definitely worth considering while the weather is rubbish. Don't have to spend half an hour cleaning the bike afterwards either

Get an MTB, getting wet/muddy is all part of the fun!

You don't need one, no. Has it been worth the investment I put in for a kickr? Absolutely. Admittedly I got mine off a friend who worked for a large cycling retailer so got mine at around £200-250 less, but still around £700.

I had an elite TT before that.....hated it. Incredibly dull and boring, just not engaging at all. The Kickr....absolutely great. TrainerRoad, Sufferfest or virtual riding.....so much better. Means I actually use it, rather than just have it tucked away.....thus the other was the waste of money.

To me at least smile

zwift is more engaging than and kickr software, train road etc. zwift racing is the hardest training i do!

if you have a PM then any old turbo will do.

But when it’s really slippy and an off at my age means broken bones, no thanks

That’s it for me with rollers and the cheap end trainers it’s the boredom.

I was looking to getting out in the Surrey countryside today, although currently snowing hard, so i will go to the pain cave instead biglaugh

I have the week off and was planning on a good week on the bike, although the forecast looks pony with heavy rain forecast most days. So it looks like more time indoors.

Coming off isn't compulsory! You don't have to downhill or get air like a 17 year old youtube addict to enjoy mountain biking. In fact, I do MORE mtb in the winter since I broke my arm coming off on ice on my road bike. The MTB gets way more muddy, but I don't mind hosing it down, which I can't bring myself to do to my road bike.

Turned up for the club ride this a.m. Mid-Surrey. Few of us there - we stood around for 20 mins looking at the weather and multiple forecasts. A small group of fasties went out. Others headed home. With two others I started a safe route but after 6 miles we all bailed and went home. Deeply unpleasant with -2C and sleet turning to light snow. Got colder as the morning progressed. No way were we doing hills! Struggled to get a decent heartrate to dispel the cold. Shivering on the doorstep for 2 mins trying to extract doorkey with numb digits! I can do cold, I can do wet, but for me cold and wet just don't mix - poor circulation and all that. At my age I don't need "character building" frown Anyway, it should warm up for most of next week.

I suffer from Reynauds and always struggle in the cold. Having bought decent winter gear it helped really substantially....but I just don't find the enjoyment quite the same. I'm genuinely happier getting dug into a turbo trainer session watching old races (was watching Tour of Poland 2017 earlier!) then I am in the sodding wet and cold. It depends what you're happy doing.....some think I'm mad for getting on the TT for 2+ hours....but I really don't mind smile

Just thinking what a crap winter this is! Had an off 3 weeks ago just before New year's, on my commute to work, where I landed on my shoulder, doing my ACJ. Just start to get over the pain and planned to have a slow run along my commute route this morning to test my shoulder, see the white road, think fk that and returned to the dredge of the turbo and will be buying another bus ticket.

Came off myself 8 weeks ago today and broke my clavicle pretty close to the ACJ...which is rather atypical; usually fractures mid-clavicle. Have only ridden out a couple of times since but it's knocked my confidence a bit in weather like this.

Roll on the summer!

My mate asked me Friday if I was going this morning, I immediately declined his invitation, glad I did they only did 3 miles out so 6 miles of cold and wet. As been said I can do cold and wet but not together.

Up here in the North East, its been wet more than its been dry. For the last 6 weeks though, we've had ice on the ground for a lot of the days, and with the councils seemingly pulling back on dropping as much road salt, the road edges are all icy puddles. I've managed one road ride at the beginning of January which was in sleet and largely unpleasant, and before and since, I've been indoors (albeit in a very cold garage) on the trainer. Due to the amount of training time i've been doing, I went from a dumb Kurt Kinetic which in itself was half decent, to a Tacx Neo which is an unbelievable bit of kit. I'm working harder on Zwift and i'm enjoying it more than I would be if getting piss wet through and caked to the eyes in st. When the weather turns i'll be delighted to get outside but until then, I'm not really any worse off for being on the turbo.
