Hi,

Getting fed up with making do with my MTB for my increasingly frequent road cycles. Can't justify the cost of a carbon fibre (the dream!)

Any recommendations for a cheap road bike? Sub £400

Cheers.

Got a Triban 5. If you're a fully fledged roadie maybe you'll find it lacking but as a mountain biker looking for a road bike it feels like a rocket. Can't go wrong.

eBay, plenty of new/nearly new bikes. I picked up a 2016 Felt Z85 a few months ago for £300. Still had the wrapping on it. There were plenty of other similar bikes at similar money.

Another for the triban. I bought a 500se nearly four years ago and have used it almost everyday since. Solid, reliable bike over the 10k+ miles I must have done on it.

The gears and crap saddle (could just be me) let it down a bit though.

Had a calibre Rivelin for the past 3 years, bar a couple of small upgrades, still enjoying it.

I've got a B'Twin Triban 500SE, and it's great. Other than needing new tyres it's been ace so far. Much better than the equivalently priced Carrera which it replaced

I've got one of these as well. I'm no expert but I like a pedal when I get the chance, and it works for me. Not sure what people spend thousands on. I'm sure if I find out I'll want to do the same though!

Another vote for the Bay etc. Had loads of absolute bargains over the years. Hand built Shorter Rochford with 105 for £180, Cannondale Liquigas carbon with 105 £240 etc etc. Whilst the Cannondale was a few years old, it had pretty much hardly been ridden and has given me several years of really enjoyable trouble free cycling, although I have upgraded the wheels recently, but it came on some Fulcrum 5's which I still have as spares.

Echo those sentiments about ebay. Has to be the go to place for bikes, loads to choose from both new and used. Free delivery on many bikes as well.

Might be worth searching by distance if you want to actually see the bike, I've often gone to view bikes or bike parts if they are near by.

Just make sure you know what size you need etc.

Good luck smile

Used Giant Defy or maybe a Cannondale Caad10 or 12 smile

Decathlon B-Twin also popular.

I've got a Giant Defy and can't fault it really. I would not hesitate in buying another.

Ebay or Gumtree!

Got a 2016 Cube Peloton Pro, 11 speed 105, ultegra mechs, Mavic wheels for £280. Its had two tyres and a new bottle cage and its been great for the last 6 months.

People list things badly or incorrectly and you can get a bargain.

Not as much of a bargain as some of the other posts, but I got my Giant Contend 2 on eBay for £225 5 miles old.

I have just dropped the stem and flipped it and raised the saddle, and fitted 1480g Cosine 32mm wheels - another eBay bargain at £130... feels so much faster now! So it owes me a shade over £350 (but the wheels will probably just go on my next road bike) which I think is great value.

I’d like to upgrade the brake lever shifters to route the gear cables under the bars because I’m a neat freak but might upgrade the groupset, but perhaps I’ll leave it and upgrade the entire bike in a year or two.
